Not entirely sure if this belongs here but hey, 'sworth a shot.
For some reason, my computer has decided that whenever I want to save a picture from the interenet (ie: right-click Save Picture As...) it will save it as a Bitmap, but that I have no other options... Very strange. Obviously I could just stick .jpg on the end of their titles when I save them but they'd still be stupidly big.

They are still .bmps. They are only saved as blabla.jpg.bmp, with blabla.jpg being the filename. If you wan't to save stuff with the extension you need to change the options somewhere in the control panel so that you can change extensions of files. I forgot where that is :p was quite awhile ago that I changed it. But i'd guess that it's in folder options.

No that doesn't really make a difference, because it's the size of the pictures that's the problem - rather than save it as 200Kb or whatever it saves it as 3Mb or summat - same as if it had been a bitmap.

Go 'tools - internet option' and under the general tab select delete files. Click ok.

Then go to 'tools - internet option' and under the general tab select 'settings' in the 'Tempory internet files options' and click 'View objects'

You should now see a folder list of all your downloaded program files. Remove any that have the status 'unknown' or 'damaged' (Right click - Remove, click yes at the prompt). Close the downloaded program files window and click ok twice.

Restart IE and try to save an image to see if it has worked.

If I delete all the temporary files, will that get rid of cookies such as saved passwords etc.? I'm guessing not, but I just thought I'd ask.
Also, if I "View objects" now - before deleting the temporary files, all it shows me is two things: Shockwave Flash Object and Measurement Service Client - both of which are apprently 4kb and installed months and a year and a half ago respectively. This doesn't seem right...

No, temporary files are .htm's, jpg's, gif's etc. Basically anything you download from a web page gets stored in temporary files. Anyway, all that means is that the next time you visit a site, you will download it fresh instead of from the cashe.

If you deleted cookies, then you would loose all your sessions for sites you are a member of, untill you logged in again. Either way, its not a big deal...

Okay, cheers. Just out of interest, how will this solve my problem? I do appreciate your help!

It will be one of the unknown or damaged programs that is causing the forced save to bmp. Removing it should stop it forcing the bmp save and fix the problem.

Thanks Link, that's perfect - everything works just dandy now! Cheers.

No probs mate, glad to hear it.

Just a tip for the future, if you have a problem, put it through google first. It not that anyone minds helping, its just that you will be sorted much quicker if google finds the page you need. For example, I ran "bmp saved default" (Google dosen't serach "as") and a page with the solution I gave you will came up at the top. This is especially true of error messages.

Anywy, glad you got it sorted.
