Right, i'm frequently getting situations where my computer just won't connect to the internet, its connecting to the router i'm behind and recieving packets from something(likely the router).
I can try restarting(did it 10 times earlier today), restarting the router, both as well as taking the adsl cable out and plugging that back in as well, but nothing seems to work, and in the end i have to wait about half an hour before i can connect.

Sometimes it also decides to give up even once i'm started up and have been online for a good while, first off i can't use http, msn and steam for example still work. When i restart however, it inevitably leads to the problem originally stated.

My dad, who owns the router won't do anything about it, as he and my mum who are on the same network, don't have any problems.

Any one have any good ideas about what the problem is or a solution? Its getting damn annoying

Network Specs:

my PC's NIC is a realtek, onboard

the router is a D-LINK DSL G604T

internet connection is BT business 512 adsl

As I've setup a router recently for my network, I can guess what your going through.

The best course of action would be to find out a few settings, and enter them manually into your pc,
Settings like the "Preferred DNS server" & "Alternate DNS server", enter these into the properties page for Internet Protocol (Tcp/ip), at Start, network connections, (right click & select properties on your BT connection).

Since the Router uses DHCP, It should assign network addresses and your ISP settings automatically, Sometimes it can mess though.

You might want to check what settings are recommended for your onboard NIC (these should be in a manual on the m/board disc, usually in the form of a *pdf file).

Also try finding updated drivers for the NIC, this may help too.

Although it sounds like a misconfiguration somewhere,
If your confident enough, you could try checking the settings for the router, since its settings page is more than likely browser based, just open IE, firefox, etc and enter the address of the router, e.g. http://10.0.0.1 And have the admin username and password to hand, check all the settings that you can see, If you change anything, then note down its original setting, and reboot the router (not your pc) after each change.

There may be a setting that cuts the connection if the router thinks any traffic is idling, it could be on a timer, 120 seconds or so.

You could also update the firmware for the router, but you would need the correct firmware to do this, the confidence to try, And the balls to own up to your dad, if you screw things up!

I've tried DHCP as well as static settings, including alternative and primary DNS. I can't change router settings as my dads passworded it and won't let me touch it (boooo!)

I'll have a look into drivers for the NIC

OOOOOOO I get that, and i have no idea what it is. It seems to work for everyone wired, but I'm on wireless and only lately problems have started to occur, which is the internet cutout you spoke about.

I have had a 'fun' :hmph: time fiddling with the router but I think I have found the best I can get. If anything happens now I have really got to get a new router, because I'm no expert with routers and networks.
