I am new to online gaming and don't want to be rude...Is it okay just to enter a dm if there is an open space? Also, any other protocol I might need to know?

feel free to jump on any server that has space open...other "rules" are basically just have good manners..otherwise go for it!!!

Anything can and will happen at any time. Welcome to the community!

me too, not sure if ive ever met anyone polite enough to wonder if it was okay to enter a deathmatch if there are open slots...

Theres some nice online gaming info to help you out at D33's webby http://onlinegaminghub.net

Theres usually nothing wrong with joining a random server as people password them if they do not want random people joining; so play away!

remember, say 'pwned' and 'n00b' about 50 times per game, if you don't then you're not a real gamer.

:P

No.. you can't join any servers.. that would be rude.

J/K.. of course you can join open servers, thats what they are for, now passworded servers, even if you can geuss the password, its passworded for a reason.

The other thing is not to be a dick. However since you posted this you don' seem like that kind of person. Don't bitch about being killed all of the time and attribute it to the other person cheating. Number two on my list is don't be a whore. When you get the RPG or Magnum don't be a camping pussy. I make it my goal in life to kill all snipers and people like this. Third rule and the most essential, have fun and try new maps and playing styles. Nothing like adding some freshness to a DM experience. Generally if you aren't a dick people will be nice back.

Haha, oh man, this guy is so toughtful.....

Let's shoot him! :sniper:

Yes you can join straight away, and no its not a stupid question

just as long as you are polite and kill as many enemy's in a game as u can then you will be fine.

so go ahead and pop your HL2 Deathmatch cherry lol :)

cefu is so politeful. Can we keep him, Ma?

What a very polite fellow. Make sure to continue your streak of politeness as follows:

1) Before shooting and killing someone in Deathmatch, make sure to politely obtain their permission to kill them. Be sure to inquire about which type of weapon they'd prefer to be killed by, and do your best to accomodate them.

2) Once you have agreed upon the manner of his or her death, be sure to determine which spot of the map they'd like to die in. For instance, most players prefer not to be slain in a bathroom atmosphere, so if you are on the lockdown map, be sure to find a more pleasant location before shooting the player.

3) Once the player has been killed by you shooting whichever area of their body they have requested, be sure to cover their bodies as a sign of respect. A desk or plank of wood can be gently placed over their inert body with the gravity gun. You may also take the time to arrange their body into a peaceful pose, if possible, but this may be tricky for a newcomer.

4) Gather all other players on the map to congregate around the fallen player. Whoever knows the player best should say a few meaningful words.

5) Once this is done, the server should join together for one full minute of silent prayer and/or contemplation before gameplay can resume.

Give him a week of playing online. That should destroy his good manners beyond recognition.

It's common courtesy to, upon joining a server, announce to all there, "OMFG IR T3H 1337 LOL". This is "netspeak" for "Good luck and have fun chums." Also, you should apologise for killing someone every time with "OMFG PWNT!!!!!!!11" Follow these two guidelines and you will quickly become a popular and well respected member of the gaming community.

I think they ought to get a fair trial beforehand and then have a squad of several men shooting the victim, i mean player, so that no-one has horrid nightmares about being responsible for the persons death

Everyone else answered the other questions, so here are.....

10 TIPS for Newbies by Snewo:

1. Make sure you know if it's deathmatch or team deathmatch.
2. If you're shooting a guy who won't die and doesn't fire back see #1.
3. If you stand still you die. Keep moving.
4. Don't "hang around" weapon or player spawn points for more than a few seconds.
5. Ignore the morons. We were all 13 once.
6. Learn what weapons work best for you and where to get 'em....quickly.
7. SPRINT SPRINT SPRINT SPRINT - For god's sake use SPRINT.
8. The closer you can get to an enemy the harder it is to miss....for him too though. That's why I recommend #7.
9. If you have surround sound listen for your enemies.
10. Learn to use Alt-Fire of weapons if you normally don't.

BONUS TIP for those calling in the next 20 minutes:
11. If you drop a nice weapon and you spawn near your body - go pick it back up.
