Stuttering on 1 hard drive... plays well on the other drive

So I have browsed this forum and it's obvious that a lot of people are getting some kind of stuttering....I have a new special case.

I originally had a Maxtor 20 gig drive with steam and hl2 on it. hl2 ran smoothly on it except for the long load times (that's normal). I then went out to buy a Seagate Barracuda 80 gig drive to put my games on it. I download Steam and hl2 on this new drive and (sigh) I get stuttering when I play HL2. I installed the new drive correctly and I should not get any stuttering. I then dug up an old 20 gig Maxtor drive and reformatted and downloaded HL2 and I get stuttering on the old drive as well.

Any suggestions?

I've got a Seagate 80 Gig Barracuda, a P4 2.8 GHz and 512 meg and it ran HL2 okay on medium textures even while the drive was heavily fragmented. High textures had major stuttering until the drive was defragged, now it's a usually minor stuttering and similar to medium textures in that respect.

So yeah, I've got the same drive and stuttering, but it's okay enough to be quite playable.

Your new 80 gig drive wasn't a S-ata drive was it? If not did you hook your 80 gig drive exactly the same way as your 20 gig drive i.e the same ide cable?
