sorry, i'm sure this has been asked loads but they all seem old posts.

i'm still playing through for the first time and i'm at the bit when you hoist your buggy up with the crane. i recently restriped my hard drive and the performance got really good but i've just had another bash and it's got really bad. it just keeps getting stuck it's really distracting. it's not just doing it on new areas or sounds just all the time.

i usually play most games on fairly high levels. i'm playing this on 1100x800 or something close, aa turned off. is there anything i can do to make things better?

my specs: 2800 amd ati 9800 pro 128m, 1G corsair 3200 xms ram

thx all

restriped your hard drive? are you using a RAID system?

Ok, thanks.

Did you try defragmenting your drive? Defragmentation gives a 20%-30% boost in performance.

TBH I would be surprised if you managed to get HL2 to run at 1100x800 on high setting at all on a 9800...My advice would be to turn down the settings.

Theres a newer thread or two on this topic up in the Community Support forum. Might be enlightening.

I used to run HL2 at 1280x1024, no AA, 4x anisotropic, high detail, reflect all with a 9800 with AGP acceleration off, and I had no stutter whatsoever. Alas, now I get stutter (began after a reformat earlier this year) even with my AGP set at 8x.

thx all.

i find it hard to turn down my settings. i can't remember the last time i played a game that low. if it continues i might stop playing again. i must be mad, but i don't find half-life 2 that great. i dunno, maybe not my kind of thing.

cheers

SO GLAD to hear you say that! It is a piece of shit, isn't it? And if you do play a worthier game like Doom 3, maybe you shouldn't play it at such a high res. After all, Doom 3 is the only per-pixel lighting game out there that will cause such a slowdown if you don't.

HL2 has per-pixel lighting? Don't make me LAUGH! :frown:

And how is that relevant to the stuttering problem?

Yeah, I run half life 2 on a 9600pro (OC 499/324) at 1024x768, but with medium detail and that anistropic stuff turned off...everything else default sept I turn shadows low and it was always smooth at about 40FPS-70FPS... with fraps.

I edited because I put 40FPS, but I retested later on in the game and was getting up to 70FPS...sometimes a little more depending.
