Do you currently have to pay a monthly fee for Steam? I mean, can you play Multiplayer for free?

There is no subscription fee of any kind, and Valve will not force one onto users in the future. There was talk of an optional subscription fee when you got all of Valve's games, but nothing has been said of it for a while so I guess they never bothered with it.
