Subtitle project for school

Hello all, I'm currently working on creating a movie for my Japanese class which is going to be shot in English and then subtitled. Problem is I don;t really know much about subtitling and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for programs to use and hints on how to use them right. I'm looking around the net for info myself, but any help would be greatly appreciated.

I remember a program name of something like VobSub that has to do with subtitles.

If you're editing it on the computer, essentially every editing program can do subtitles...just put titles near the bottom of the screen, and there you go, simple subtitles. I think Windows Movie Maker even has a setting for it (in case you don't have something better). Of course its a bit time consuming, but I really can't think of any other ways.
