NOT HAPPY at the moment.
I FINALLY bought a new computer, installed HL2 EP1 and started it, it played like a DREAM, the recommended settings being almost entirely top-range (just had to change resolution to LCD), no problems.

I start it up one day later, go to load my game, and it freezes instantly upon loading, have to restart. This happens with ALL my saved games. I start the game from the beginning.. Now it loads okay.. but suddenly all the animation of models and animation is jerky, as if they are missing every other frame. Running around the environment is still smooth though!

So what the hells happened!!?!? PLEASE HELP, I have tried to uninstall all steam and games and reinstall but the same problem (strangely though my saved games were still available..so maybe it didn't uninstall everything unless steam holds some stuff online(?).

I have tried reducing all settings but still no change! It was fine yesterday!

My new PC is a dual core 2.66Mhz Intel 6700, 2GB Ram, ATI X1950 graphics card.

I'm at a loss! This so isn't fair! I'd really appreciate some ideas.

I just played again today and had the exact same thing happen. Very strange. The models are quite jerky, but the environment and player movement is smooth. I also have a dual core system, and have had my Steam games running on this system without any problems before.

My specs (the ones that matter to this issue at least) are:

AMD Dual core 3600+ (clocked to 4200+ specs, but running without any issues since I got it over 6 months ago)

1 GB Corsair CM2 RAM

Gigabyte 7600 512MB Graphics card

Gigabyte GA-M55plus Mobo

Seems to be an issue with the latest Steam update, people are reporting it everywhere. Wait for Valve to patch it better again.

Wow thats a relief! Although I've found it hard to track down any posts about it, if anyone has any links to posts or where Valve might comment on the issue it would be appreciated.

Yeah I agree. It could be software glitch, wait for next update. Meanwhile do disk defragmenter, delete Windows Prefetch folder contents, set Anti virus security software in gaming mode, allow Windows data execution prevention to let steam run. Yada, yada, yada. See if that somewhat takes care of the problem.

Good Luck.

Here is a thread from the Steampowered forums about it. There might be others too. There are a few threads in the HL2 Help & Support section here which seem to be related also.

I just downloaded the update myself to check - and yes it did screw up everything. When I sit back and think about it this really is an enormous cock up. Good luck finding a comment from Valve though...

Haha, this was driving me nuts earlier because I was using it to benchmark some new hardware. :D
Good to know its not just me.

type this in console:

cl_interp_ratio 2

this is a workaround, every time you restart steam it will revert back. Open notepad and type that command and save it as autoexec.cfg, and put that in \Steam\SteamApps\<your user name>\half-life 2 episode one\hl2\cfg.

should fix it
