So, when I was younger I dicked around in GTA games a lot, over friends houses. Beyond just going on random rampages, the games never interested me a whole lot.
However, now I want one (I own a PC)

Though I cannot decide because I do not know which is the best. Vice City is tempting because it brings back a lot of nostalgia when I used to play it (and at the time I was getting into 80's music) and yeah, I love the 80's thing.

However, I always remember people saying GTA3 is superior in storyline, I've heard a lot of people say it's the best.

But, I am most leaning towards GTA4, for... well, typical reasons I supposed, such as it being modern, with slightly better graphics, and from what I hear the MP is fun (true?)

Of course though, I want something with a good story, and overall a good game more than anything.

GTA3, b/c the others are just updates with stupid chores involved

I haven't played 4 but I know 3 and vice city was pretty meh when it came to story. Mostly just an excuse to run missions. don't be stupid. get 4.

4 was too realistic imo. it took away a lot of fun but it did like hammer said, have a lot of story to it. they need to make the next GTA game more unrealistic and have more story. i want to die laughing every five minutes or so but i also want to cry like a girl when someone gets killed

Vice City is my favourite, but you can't enjoy the other games as much after playing GTAIV and enjoying the beauty and physics at its heart. San Andreas was truly truly awful so definitely avoid that. But when push comes to shove, you must get GTAIV.

GTA IV was sublime in terms of the tech employed. Seriously, a sandbox game with Euphoria physics is the best thing since sliced bread. I would have liked it more if there was less "oh, you now have a life, go do other stuff" missions.

Tried San Andreas. Didnt look bad at all.

GTAIV is sweet hot shit regarding having fun with the physics. I'm probably easily pleased, but I just love standing on train platforms and pushing civilians in front of trains and the driving physics are a lot more satisfying than in previous games because it's more difficult to get right.

However, the setting of Vice City is immense and employs the best radio music. Some of my best memories are of cruising round Vice City with great 80s pop playing. I hope the next game in the GTA IV series is set in Vice City.

Definitely Vice City. It has the over all best atmosphere and soundtrack imo.
I have spent countless of hours playing it online (MTA) with my friends.
The original GTA as well as GTA 3 had the most profound impact on me though.
San Andreas is the most fun and juvenile of all of them but the storyline and characters did not appeal to me at all. GTA 4, although flawed from a gameplay perspective, has the best storyline and characters of all the series. The lack of game features from the previous games and a limited arsenal was somewhat of a disappointment to me.

4 will likely impress you the most, but of the series I found it to be the most boring. Tech and story wise it is the best, but it's padded with way too much fluff and not enough tearing around the streets, offing pigs, and general sandbox goodness. The combat is rather clunky too. There are moments, though, when you'll find yourself driving over a bridge as the sun sets, looking out the window at the city and listening to the radio, that are quite breathtaking.

I liked GTA IV a lot, but the main story sags in the middle and by the end of the game I'd pretty much lost any sympathy for Nikko. He's pretty much gone from guy looking for a break, to guy who likes to break things for money money MONEY!!! and that ruined it all for me.

I'd go with Vice City like a few others. You know you're a bastard from the off, so its not a problem to be villainous, and the story overall is entertaining. Plus 80s music

Nothing beats the first mission with the chainsaw in Vice City. Chasing that guy along the path with rollerskaters all around you. Awesome.

*imagines Vice City skaters with Euphoria*

I am beyond pissed right now.

I just got GTA 4 for the PC (retail)

After installing it, creating the mandatory Windows Live, and Multiplayer accounts. I find out you NEED to be logged into Windows Live in order to continue and play.

HOWEVER every time I log in, it asks to install an update, after going through the update installation process the game shuts down.

Repeat.

There is a bug which causes the Live update to crash. You have to go the Microsoft's site, and update Live manually. Also it would be better if you updated GTA 4 manually instead of letting Live do it.

All in all Vice City is my favourite. The whole 80's vibe was awesome, and GTA4, and San Andreas could never match it.

How do I update GTA4 manually?

Well, I'm going to try to return it and perhaps then go the steam route.

If that doesn't work, well..

no point. you will still have to use live and social club to play so you just added another app you need to run the game.
