Well I'm building my gf a computer for christmas because she needs a new one badly, so I need some insight since joule is of no help at all. She'll be using it to do projects and homework for college, so that'll be Word, excel, etc. She downloads music, uses msn, internet/email, so nothing too over the top. I'm just wondering what type of CPU I should use, is this a good case where a Celeron D would work fine or would there be a big difference from a p4? Or I could go the AMD route which would be fine, I just dont know whether to go with a p4/athalon or go celeron D/sempron in this case.

other than that I'm going for a gig of RAM, decent sized hard drive, dvd burner and a nice case.

that will be a real cheap job so
get an athlon 2800 = enough oomph and still cheaper than useless celerons

yeah you guys suck balls at recommending shit you ****ing nubs, so i decided to go all out and bought her a pentium D 820 dual core processor and a new intel mobo, yeah i ****in rawk

I'm confused by this thread.

Hold the ****ing jokes.

pentium D 820 dual core processor
LAWL

Anyway, you should get an Athlon XP, a decent graphic card (Think ATi 9500), a LAN card, a sound card (there are some 25$ surround sound cards available), a decent mobo and 512 MB RAM should do it. Oh, and 80 GB should be more than enough, but currently 120 GB is very, very cheap, so go for it if it isn't much more.

I already got the dual core and intel mobo, the 820 retails for like $320 canadian on ncix.com and the mobo cost like $145 canadian on there as well but i got the chip and mobo brand new in box for $250 canadian so it's a pretty sweel deal. from here I'm gunna go with 1 gig of OCZ gold series dual channel 2 x 512 DDR2 RAM, dunno what size hard drive, whatever is cheap, the board is PCI express and doesnt have integrated gfx so i dunno what im gunna do about a gfx card, and i'll just need a case and dvd burner

I guess it's winter so it's a good thing? :D

For a word and excel you really just need a basic machine and it will still seem quick and responsive. I probably would have recommended a single core CPU running around 2.8ghz/2800+ or so and 512MB memory. Just you spent a little more on dual core and probably DDR2 memory/board needed for compatiblity with that system. I'm not sure what ya paid for it though.

It will do what ya want...plus heat the room.

she's blonde, hot, and gives me sex. how is this a waste of money? :D
