Suitemate's HL2 runs like total crap! Meets min requirements! Ideas?

His machine:

1.5ghz P4
256mb RAM
geforce4mx 64mb (dx7)

Other suitemate's comparable low-end machine that runs it:

1.8ghz P4
512mb RAM
geforce2 64mb (dx7)

(all low settings, but runs it very smooth)

both are above the min requirements (barely), but the first could only use more ram to even out the difference between the two comps. anyway, friend #1's game is not playable in the least. he takes one step and it stutters like crazy, sound stutters and frames stutter. totally unplayable.

anyone else with a similar rig have any similar problems? please don't tell him to upgrade... thats a given.
 
Youre GF4 cards are crap and are 100% obsolete.
CPUs are also out of date, not 100% obsolete but getting there.
256RAM wont run HL2 decently even on low settings, 512RAM can run HL2 decently BUT it depends on what kind of ram it is.
 
Ive got a 1.6 p4 with the same vid card ive just got more ram.i got 768 ram.He really does need a fresh stick of ram hell its cheap
 
check out the tweaks for stuttering on www.tweakguides.com. also note, 256 megs of ram is the minimum requirement, and the cpu isn't much more over the minimum recommended.
 
Teh gf4 is teh suck compared to the gf2 mx imo.
