Kenji Uchida, the president of the Sunrise anime studio, told attendees of a Tokyo International Anime Fair (TAF) 2009 symposium that actor Keanu Reeves' enthusiasm for its Cowboy Bebop anime was the deciding factor in the recent live-action film deal. Uchida said Reeves (The Matrix, A Scanner Darkly, Johnny Mnemonic) himself visited Japan twice to express his interest in adapting the stylized science-fiction anime, and added that if Reeves had not done so, the deal might not have been made. Uchida further noted that the difficult negotiations with the 20th Century Fox film studio continued for two years until agreeable contract terms were drafted. He emphasized that the contract allows Sunrise to assert quality control by stating, "If the script is terrible, the live-action film adaptation will not be approved."

keanu reeves is the only person i know that can talk without using punctuation.

I think the deciding factor should be whether or not he can pull off the hair.

i think he can look the part, but he needs to be more a hardass for it to work

I seriously would watch this movie just so I can say, "I've fkn watched the Cowboy Bebop movie". I don't have high hopes, sadly. *Crosses fingers*

But... you could already say that, and without shame in your voice!

Goddamn all this talk of Bebop lately, I've seriously got to rewatch this shit.

Haha look what the image search dragged in. Laurence Fishburn and Johnny Depp? Really?

Edit: Hah, I'm pretty sure that's a guy playing Ed, though. Bonus points for that.

We'll see. I think I have a higher opinion of Keanu than most people. Sure, he's about as versatile as a stiff wooden board, but most of his roles only require that.

Also, there's a movie version of Johnny Mnemonic?!

There are hardly any similarities between Matrix kind of main character and Cowboy Bebop kind of main character.

Okay maybe he can pull it off. But you KNOW they're going to have to but a bullet time scene in there. With 90% certainty, there will be a bullet time scene in there. And it will stink.

Cowboy Bebop also has perhaps one of the most scantily clad main characters in Anime history. I'm wondering how they're going to pull THAT off.

Think Constantine.
Man, Constantine is nothing like Spike. Far too gruff, not nearly enough wise-cracking. And Keanu never SMILES, at least not in any kind of convincing or charming way. He just doesn't have Spike's swagger or coolness.

I think the most interesting part was how they never really acknowleged that she was wearing close to nothing. It was just "Hey Faye, how have you betrayed us/gotten mixed up in a whacky plot/failed to capture the bountyhead this time", never any "put a shirt on you goddamn *****"

Its the future. We're wearing less now than we were 50 years ago. Maybe the trend continues.

Same here I have a higher opinion of him than most people but I still don't think he's right for this role.

Also you didn't know there was a johnny mnemonic movie? It blew anyway from what I heard.

It got a 14 % on Rotten Tomatoes.

On a random note, the new streetfighter only got 4 % on Rotten Tomatoes.
