For all you 56kers out there who want to play hldm, and/or cs: source with the least lag possible...I've got some tips for you;

Disable all background programs, like antivirus programs.

Go into play games, and right click each game you have, and check the properties. make sure each game is not set to autoupdate.

Make sure you play with as low graphics settings as possible.

Try Joining servers with less than 10 people.

I've managed to acheive a ping of 250 in a hldm game using just these tips.

thats all for now, maybe someone else has a few more ideas they would like to add??
---oh and
my comps specs
2.0ghz intel processor
256megs of ram
32mb rage pro graphic card

Quick question for Ryjalon5k, kinda off topic:

How does HL2 run on your machine? (res, setting level, and smoothness, if possible)

I have similar computer specs and am wondering how the single-player game will run (it's a laptop, so I can't upgrade anything but RAM).

it runs pretty smooth on reccomended specs..i have a problem in the open areas like when your driving vehicles. i have to look straight up or down for it to not drop to like 10 fps. other than that its definently playable. i have no problem at all whooping ass on multiplayer either.

edit- reccomended specs are very low.
640x480
low texture/models ect.
