Also, anyone notice how after the initial burst, when all the little ends are dancing around, the first one that goes near the ground is where the main lighting bolt hits? You can actually see it forming the main bolt as it goes down.

Yes, basically the cloud is discharging its static electricity with the ground. First it ionizes the air, and discharges some energy that way, but as soon as it can make an ionized channel to the ground, all the rest of the energy is discharged through there. So its like branch...branch...branch...ground...BOOM!
