In games that support surround sound, are the sounds and quality of the surround sound determined by the game? or is it basically the same in everygame? I have this question because i just got some new speakers and a sound card today, and i was playing call of duty. The sound coming from the front was really sharp and good quality, but the sound in the back was kinda always the same volume and sorta not as good sounding. the speakers are all the same, so i was just wondering if this kind of stuff is determined by a game. Btw, Half life 2 and Doom III are going to be amazing.

Depends on the game - if it just says 'surround sound' then it will be a generic multiple speaker codec used, and the quality will be determined by the hardware.

If there are multiple modes ( Dolby / EAX / Etc ) then as long as your hardware supports one of these modes, it will be of that modes' quality.

Turning on those modes can affect peroformance in gameplay alot.

What speakers and soundcards you got anyways? Just wondering because I bought a z5300's from best buy today for $100 discounted. I havent really got a time to listen to them while playing games but I did watch black hawk down with them and the sound was great.
