I've got an old Phillips Sonic Edge 5.1 PSC605 soundcard and in most games i can't get the surround sound to work, the only game that has so far is the Svenco-op mod for HL. In UT2004 only 4 speakers work (centre and subwoofer turn off) and in HL2 and CS:S the speakers don't distinguish from each other (it's like having a 2 speaker setup with sound coming out of 5 speakers). The sound box is set on 5.1, i have the latest update driver for my soundcard and i can't find any help at all so if you guys could help me out i would appreciate it alot. If any1 doesn't find a solution can u suggest any sound cards that might work with these games 4 surround sound plz? I don't really want to spend more than £30 (not sure how many $ that is, round $60 maybe)

I've got similar problem. The game gives sound only if the sound properties are set to stereo, eventhough I'll have 7.1 speaker system and support from motherboard (useing optical cable to creatives decoder). What i got from Phillips (the manufacturer) was a load of BS as they replied in a minute to my problem and so it was obvious it was an automated response. I have asked Steam and they haven't replied to me yet. What Steam has said only applies to the big manufacturers of sound cards as they have all released or are going to release updated drivers to most of their sound cards to fix the problems but seeing as Phillips isn't one of the majors I can't get an answer right away. So instead i thought y not buy another, much better, soundcard and viola, the soundcard i ordered (link posted above) should get 2 me on Tue 11th and i have been assured by creative that the card will work for HL2 and UT2004, the games i want to hear in surround sound
