In the next couple weeks I will be replacing the mobo on my Gateway. I have neve replaced a mobo and am wondering if I have to do anything to the bios or drivers or whatever before i put it in. Or if i can just put it in and have it work. Thanks in advance

please give us your system specs....

and the mobo/cpu you will be putting in.

(the more details the better)

you will want to format your hardrive if your installing a new mobo.

as far as bios updates....only if your putting in an older mobo.

main thing is, format the drive and do a fresh install of windows on the new motherboard, and the bios is onboard the motherboard, so when you swap motherboards you might need to set the FSB to the proper setting, and you'll need to detect your IDE drives and set boot order and stuff, just normal stuff.

of course you can, i have a gateway, it's just like any other comp, except they have the BIOS all locked, i've replaced the 4600 it came with with a 9800 Pro, replaced the PSU with a 400w, just ordered a new case, and this xmas am replacing the mobo, memory, and processor

I did the same thing with my dell, took all the parts out put them in a new mobo and case.

Should I format my hard drive before or after I put in the new mobo. And how would I go about doing this.

Boot up with the new mother board in from your OS CD, it will have an option to format the disk, do that then install normally. Alternatively, it is possible to not have to format/reinstall all your programs, I hear you can boot up the new motherboard from the OS CD and choose a repair install and it will update all the drivers for you. Never tried it, some people think it is less reliable and prone to problems, theoretically it should work fine though.

with new motherboard, things should just auto-set themself ( most things ), things like ur FSB/ mhz speed, might need adjusting...
reformat harddrive, and install windows.
