System hangs at end of intro.....

Hello folks!
I have read many similar threads about HL2 crashing at/near the beginning, but not right at the end of the intro....which is my current problem.

I bought this game today, and alas, I cannot bring it back to the shop as they said that once you register.......:hmph:

When I ran the game for the first time, my reccommended setting graphically were medium/high, and so thats what I ran the game at. it crashed just at the point where you are about to take control of the character on the train, and the screen stuck looking bright white, with a continual audio stuttering.

I had to manually reboot. no error message after reboot.

I then checked for updates for all my hardware, (all up-to date), put all settings to low and disabled anti-aliasing, all the good stuff, and so.......it now crashes as the train is slowing down at the station.

This is pretty bad. a £32 game which won't run on a powerful machine which should be fine. I think I have covered all the basics, like disabling all progs in the background etc, but no joy.

Specs:

P4 3.0ghz processor
Windows XP sp2
1G DDR RAM
120G hard drive space
Radeon 9600XT 256mb video card
EMU 1212M sound card

I look forward to your replies.

Oops!

Should have stipulated that I have indeed tested as I applied changes!
I have also just played Counter Strike succesfully, (if being shot about 10 times counts as success!), and the stress test for my card resulted in about 65fps. still no joy with Half Life tho!

What can I say?

THANK YOU!
I couldn't see anything anywhere about validating my HL2 files.....it is far from perfect, but at least I can play the game.
When I should be gasping at the amazing graphics, I am now faced with average graphics and very jerky and stuttery gameplay, as playing the game, it seems like my PC could explode at any moment but.....at least its not crashing!
Thanks, again, and please let me know if you have any more bright ideas about sorting out poor performance.

I now believe in magic

Thnks guys, you have re-affirmed my belief in people geekier than myself!
HL2 runs on medium-high specs, fairly smoothly.

I am one happy bunny! :E
