Hi!!
I come from Austria and speak German an so i excuse my Englisch!!
I have a question! Can i play half life 2 with my pc (40 fps) ?? (Athlon XP 1700+, 256 DDR-RAM, Albatron Geforce FX 5600 XT (not good the same as a 5200))
When is the release from Half Life 2!!

Minimum Requirements

1.2 GHz Processor

256MB RAM

DirectX 7 level graphics card

Windows 2000/XP/ME/98

Mouse

Keyboard

Preferred System

2.4 GHz Processor

512MB RAM

DirectX 9 level graphics card

Windows 2000/XP

Mouse

Keyboard

That graphics card will severely hinder the performance, if possible i recommend upgrading to a 9800 pro. An extra stick of 256mb ram will also help

but yes, you should be able to play, albeit not very pretty-like :)

Awesome German spelling of "English."

I'm not trying to troll or anything; it's awsome that you speak English so well.

Upgrade to a geforce 6600 GT when its out, it will probally be the best budget videocard.

I've heard it will perform as good as a Radeon 9800 XT , and it will cost around $199.

I have a GeForce 4 MX 420, 64 MB Memory, AGP 4x.

I know that that will run HL2, but it will be not as great. I want to buy a new one, and had a ATi Radeon 9600XT in mind. Is that a good card?

I half expected this thread to contain benchmark info.

I've the same card as you right now, and I was thinking of buying a 9600 XT too :p

ah the 9600xt sucks ass ive got one. i play doom3 in 800x600 with high details and the framerate barely stays above 45. i mean just barely. then when i played farcry the 30 minutes or so before i realized it sucked and uninstalled it. i ran 1024x768 with everything maxed and the water on ultra high and guess what.. it barely stayed above 60 just barely. it dipped to like 50 a few times. and unreal2, dont let me get started. i played unreal2 1024x768 with everything on high and it barely stayed at 60fps the whole time. im like wtf 60fps all the time is all i can get with this crappy ass card playing unreal2. but luckily i can play ut2k4 with everything set on high ( holy sh*t! mode) and it stays above 75 fps most of the time...MOST of the time. all in all the 9600xt sucks, but if thats all you can afford get it. i would suggest a 9800pro, or a x800 or a 6800gt or even get a fx5200ultra. its ULTRA better than a 9600xt. take it from me.

When is the release from Half Life 2!!

We FX users are in for a real treat once we intsall Half-Life 2. 'Sall I'm saying. Try to upgrade if you can and maybe get another stick of ram.

EDIT: and welcome to the forums.

I've read on a site, possibly a post by Gabe himself i forgot lol but it says you can "run" the game with 800Mhz Processor, 128Mb RAM and a DX6 Compatible card. But if this is true then the graphics and textures really are gonna be on low low L O W

I Myself have a 2800Xp , 1Gb of RAM (some good kingston shite) 9800 Pro and all the other mod cons lol. So i sohuld be able to play it reasonably, hopefully 1280x1024 with everything on medium at least. Otherwise i might actually update my comp and get a better GFX card because i do want to play the game at a good level gfx wise.

anyone know approx. how much hd space hl2 will take? And also how big do you think CS:S will be?

-Half-Life 2 size-

Half-Life 2 is about 3.5 GB uncompressed and about 2 GB compressed. This doesn't include CS:Source, HL-1:Source, DoD:Source, the SDK, or whatever. It's just the straight HL-2 sizes.

There you go. That is almost 2 month old information though. The size could be bigger to due to updates they have made in that time.

Man all these system spec question make me sad, i got everything to run HL2 except a video card.

acme420 there is absolutely no way in hell you run those games and those settings with those FPS ratings on that card. No way.

It stays above 60 and 75 FPS and it sucks ass. What you want 200 fps in a game?!

Fact number 1:
1) The 9600 XT is a budget card - get's the job done and is an actual competitior for 5900 ultra in games like Doom 3 and HL2.

2) No way. I mean NO WAY can you get 60 FPS with it in Far cry, maybe around high 30s or 40s, with everything maxed out. I suppose you are probably talking about the outdoors (with no enemies on screen) or looking at the sky.

3) You are comparing a 9600XT with a 6800 GT? - each card fits it's price. A guy who's willing for optimum performance would buy a 500 dollar card like that, a more budget - in -sight gamer would choose 9600XT.

The 9600XT was launched in response to cards like 5600 ultra, 5700 and 5800 - and it really puts up a good fight.

Yea acme is full of shit, i mean ppl running 9800's were get 70 fps at max settings in farcry my friend had a 9600 pro and he was running farcry at about 25-30 fps at 800x600 with most of the settings at medium.

o ok thanks. And you too drizz, thats good news. Thats not that big, i was afraid it might be huge becuase of the current amount of room that steam games is taking up. Ill put money into a new drive soon anyway just in case. I have a feeling HL2 will get big :p
