I currently have an AMD Athlon XP 1700+ with 768 MB DDR SD RAM and a GeForce 3 Ti 200. I'm going to replace my GeForce with an ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 MB. I know some of you might think this to be a stupid question, but nevertheless, I do want to ensure my first HL-2 experience will be one of intense joy and not letdown because I can't run it on max detail. So, does everyone think with this system config I can run HL-2 on max details smoothly?

the only thing i can see there that might couse a slowdown is the processor mate. I would get at least a 2.4 if i were u. :)

i think the ones they ran the E3 vids on was 2.8 or sumthing. Basicaly get the best CPU u can offord.

hope that helps m8 :)

1700 should be fine...thats 1500 mhz sumthing... you should be fino

fine, yeah..................

the reason i went so high is cos he asked for max details on :O

so i think much higher myself than that.

You processor should be enough because amds are fast. If you can afford it newegg has 2600+ for like <$100

My opinion: Get a faster AXP, preferably a 2400+ or higher. I myself am getting a 2400+ before HL2 is released, plus new ram and mobo so I can run the damn thing on my radeon 8500 128mb :)

They haven't release (atleast I don't think they have) what the lowest standards will be to run the game on maximum graphics so none of us really have an idea of what they're going to be.

I wouldn't get the 9800 Pro. The 9900 is coming out soon and its suposed to blow the 9800 away. Also its rumored to come out the same day as Half-Life 2 because if you buy it retail it comes bundled with Half-Life 2 free. Just a thought and thats what I'm going to do. Not only that but you won't need to get a card until the day HL2 comes out if thats what you're buying it for and its easily installed so that'll be your best bet.

You might need to up your processor. 1.5 GHz doesn't seem adaquite enough to me maybe you should get around 2.4 to 2.8 but thats just me.

Yeah--some of us can't afford a $500+ card. And seeing as the retail price of a 9800 256 MB is just that, the 9900 will likely be at least $100 more.

Some of us don't have $500+ to shell out on a video card. Seeing as how the 9800 256 MB is exactly that, the 9900 will most likely be at least $100 more.

marksman's advice seems to be on the dot here.. if ur aiming for maxed settings, ur definitely gonna need a higher speed cpu

if u got some cash.. but not alot, then an AMD cpu is probably best bet.. however if u have cash to throw around, then u can be selective in the process and maybe even get one of the higher end INTEL cpu's.

but ya, maxed settings, means u need a faster cpu.

Mabye but a lot of the time they'll just put the new card into the top price range and push everything else down a little.

I don't really think it's enough to run max details, enough to run it smoothly with decent details though.

Flux thats why i said rumored when explaining it :/

I'm still going to wait for the 9900 though.
