I kinda missed the boat on these games.
What was it about them that made them so great?
I hear a lot of people talkin about how good they were and I am interested in playing this game now, just want to hear some juicy details from the hardcore fans.

basically they were FPS/RPG hybrids, the major point was the atmosphere, you're alone. And it does a great job of making you feel alone.

Well, no point on trying System Shock 1, it’s too outdated now, but System Shock 2 is still holding pretty well. It’s such atmospheric game, that even Doom III, with all that hype, couldn’t beat it in that department. Audio-logs for SS2 themselves make game SO much immerse. I don’t know, listening to the guy getting shot and dragged on the floor, screaming for his life, there is something chilling at it, maybe staring at his corpse helps that a bit.

It was made by looking Glass. What more needs to be said? You should buy it purely because it has their name on it.

Anybody know how to get it to run on XP? Is there a patch at all?

I got the demo of SS2, but it keeps on locking up. I was a bit disappointed.

ive been trying to make ss2 work on xp, i got the patch. but now when im in the beginning picking skills and such it locks up and says my video drivers are outdated or something similiar to that. but i just downloaded new drivers for my video card the other day

Should try Googling that problem.

I played SS2 on XP a couple months back. Worked fine.

Yes and no. You get a quick run down of what happend before in the intro. But it wouldn't hurt to play the original, as long as you don't mind a somewhat ancient graphics engine.

SS1 can be executed on today's systems.. but it requires some über strange hacks, patches and tweaks to work. It's still a great game, though.

One of the things that makes SS2 so pants-pissing scary is the fact that enemies appear at random. Most enemies are in pre-determined spots, but more will always appear randomly. So you are constantly looking over your should, listening to noises... and then you hear "excuse me sir, where are you?" and a Protocol Droid comes running at you from somewhere. Or maybe a zombie appears behind your back with a lead pipe. And the sounds! Some rooms sounded so scary that I didn't even visit them.

The first time you hear a worm guy come running at you with a wrench saying 'Get away from me, RUN!' before caving in your skull is atmospheric, the little roar they do first is sure sign to run. Then you could like i did, spin around, fire my shotgun to find its locked up. Damn all them dead end corridors.

One cool thing about SS2 is the research option. You can take internal organs and other things from dead enemies and research them (you need to have enough points in the research skill though). Some research requires chemicals that are found in storage rooms throughout the ship. Researching will increase the damage you do to enemies, as well as gives you interesting background information. There's even an alien weapon in the game that can't be used without being researched...

Maybe I'll play it this weekend.

Your song is not ours. SO WE MUST BASH YOUR HEAD IN REPEATEDLY WITH THIS HERE PIPE.

you know, the more i play modern games, the better SS2 becomes. and it makes me sad that Ion Storm will potentially work on SS3 ;(

but anyway, SS2 forever :D

Don't worry, it won't, because EA got licence for SS games... ;(

ss2 is such a good game. When I finally heard about it, it was kind of hard to find a copy of it. When I did find one at a local store, it was well worth the effort to get my hands on it. It doesn;t surprise me that doom uses a similar pda system, but in SS2 it actually made the game way scarier and provided more of a story than d3's has. Just thinking about those poeple talking on some of the recordings and hearing their voices change really freaks me out. All that talk about "the many"... gives me goosebumps. Great game! If you haven't played it you're missing out.

After System Shock 2, all of Doom 3's PDA entries seem sort of dull. Just goes to show you, no matter how old the graphics are, SS2's atmosphere can still stand up to the latest and biggest game.

Ruun. RUUUUN!

I think that considering the voice talent of SS2 was the chaps making the bloody game Doom 3 should hang it's head in shame.

Now where was i.... Oh shit freakin monkeys.

Nothing was worse than hearing the beeps of the security cameras and franticly looking around trying to find and shoot it before it alerted the many to where you were. :p The closest I can come to a negative on this game was that the machine gun made the other 3 weapon classes pretty useless, least that was my experience.

well the combat was so so, no hitboxes to speak, its hard when you're often aiming to bag a headshot but you might as well be going for the first thing you see.

I dont need DOOM 3. I have System shock 1 & 2. AND they are SCARY!
