For work related reasons, I have to build a server computer and get a T1 line installed in my damn apartment. $400 a month I'm gonna have to pay which is alot of money but I figure I should enjoy this sheeeit once a get it in August.

So how can I best use this for my own personal enjoyment.

I was thinking of installing a wireless router and a wireless card up to my computer and using the server computer as a file server for my own movies and other crap. But also, my roomate works for the cable company so I get free cable modem. Damn man, I never knew it would be such a f*ckin hasstle to have so much bandwith.

What would you guys do?

Huh? not really, lol, I honestly am just looking for the best way to leech off of this shit.

online games, games, games and more games. very low ping.

Whoa, calm down blackeye. I have 2 computers and a router but I had to get a new one and stuff because the one I had was really bad and plus it got messed up. It might actually pay off if he knows the best setup. If you have more than one computer in your house than you should definitely get a router. My bad router was a Belkin wireless, dunno the exact model, but know I have a Linksys and it works great. Get one of those.

yea dude i got a T3 line in my house to! i couldnt decide on that or the free secret government computer networks i could get!!!!

Grow up man damn...

Well I'm kinda wondering if I should have ANY of my movies and crap on my actual computer or should I just leave them on the server computer?

Yea but mmm, beyond that. Should I host a HL2 game server?
Really depends how much bandwith is being used up already buy whatever it is your work is using the T1 line for. A 32 player battlefield server needs 1.5 mbps upstream and downstream. A standard DSL line has 1.5mbps downstream and 128 KBPS upstream. I dont know how much a T1 has. But it also really depends on how good your computer is. I dont think you will be able to host a HL2 server on anything less then 2.0GHZ and 512 of Ram. Unreal tournament needs 2.0ghz and 512 ram to run a 32 player server I would think half life 2 is relatively the same.

Hosting a HL2 server souns like a great idea! But you might need a pretty awesome computer to do that.

Well a T1 is 1.5 dedicated up/down during night time and crap, about at least half of that should be free. The computer is gonna be fast so speed isnt a problem. So I should be able to host a nice 16-24 player game from about 9pm and later...

But will HL2 have a better MP system then BF1942?

no one knows but valve yet

What exactly is it your work is using this for anyways?

I have my broadband/mp3s/films/etc shared throughout the house via my 54mbps wireless router, its pretty cool cuz I have a wireless laptop and a wireless SD card for my XDAII.

If you decide to hook your connection up to a wireless router, just make sure you enable WEP and only allow connections from authorised MAC addresses - a T1 in the wrong hands can do a lot of damage.

I work for a video editing company that needs all the raw video and picture files to be stored on a remote server for access. Up to this point everyone had to get their own server with this company called calpop. I went to the big boss man and told him I would run a server and it would save everyone money. He agreed and OKed it. I did some work with servers earlier this year and learned alot so I know what im doing.

I'm already paying $100 a month for the server I have now.

a properly set up t1 is 1.5 mbps in both directions at the same time all the time, and would be nailed up 99% of the time or better. if you have speed or downtime issues, at $400/mo. you should have them looked at.. a good telco can test and fix a t1 in 4 hours and it will stay up for YEARS and not go down. As for game servers 16 players should be a snap. maybe even 32, just remember to limit the amount of BW they get.
if the T1 turns out to be too much of a pain, try SDSL,HDSL,IDSL, or even ISDN.
hec, even my new adsl-max is 3 mbps down and 384k up for $55/mo.
as for sever specs.. gobs of memory, minimum 1GB, also maybe a raptor HD.
a true server has MUCH different req. than a gaming rig. also a HW firewall w a DMZ
and a good AV. BTW if you are NOT the one paying for the T1, be carefull if they find out you are running a game sever they may not be too happy.

I think a T1 line is faster then 1.5 mbps upstream and downstream. Because the service pack im looking at getting from my service provider is 2.5 mbps downstream and 640 kbps upstream and its only $44.99 an month. (canadian dollars) If your paying $400 a month I would assume you would be getting a lot more speed then i would. But highspeed internet acess is a lot cheaper in canada! atleast from what ive heard.

Its dedicated bandwith. So its gauranteed 1.5mb's a second, youll NEVER get anything close to that with cable or regular DSL no matter where you live...maybe only in South Korea.

I looked at sDSL and the speed was 768k up/down max, but for the speed I need its gotta be T1. I live in L.A. so the infrastructure out here is some of the best in america so I wont have to worry about downtime according to that...and their 99% uptime gaurantee ;)

If your paying under $60 on a DSL line, your getting speeds a nice cable modem would smoke.

I just dont see why you dont fork out half of that money for a high speed Cable line? Over here in UK £100 a month would get you stable 2-5mb upload/download line

My cousin lives in Alaska and he was paying something like $100 a month for cable. In canada you can get 5 mb download and 1 mb uplod for $70 a month which is like 55-60 american :cheese:. lol some of the cable companies are offering residential T3 but I wouldnt get cable because the more people are on the internet in your neighbourhood the slower it is. DSL is a much better choice IMO. Its gaurnteed not to get slow when lots of people are on the internet. Japan is supposed to be even cheaper but I dont know what the prices are there.

What some people dont understand about the term "dedicated"...I just dont know.

eh?

Anyway: Ideally you'd want a cable connection in a retirement community lol

the idea cable modems slow down is a myth...

they allowcate bandwith automatically to any area they MAY need it more, and that only happens a few times a year.

Ive used cable since 1997 so I kno what im talking about and its only got faster, unlike DSL which has got slower.

I still have yet to see anyone i know on DSL have a lower ping then me. Cable also has waaay less nods to go through then DSL which is great for gaming because nods are pretty much what make up that ping difference, not bandwith (Between high speed connections).

How large is your hard drive. Just become a supernode on a file-sharing program.

FictiousWill, To answer your question about how i know so much about T1's , is that is what i do for a living, i work a for a telecom provider installing, tblshoot, maintain T1's .. i also do networking and xDSL.. if you guys have any hardcore telecom /network questions i'm your man. OBTW telecom OUTSIDE the US has dfferent speeds and pricing than us. i see several guys from the UK/canada on this thread , international telecom is a whole 'nother animal , trust me..
