Tabula Rasa

something about the name really annoys me for some reason
i can't quite figure it out though :p

It's probably because it sounds Middle Eastern, you racist.

:p

The story behind it seems fantastic, but after watching some gameplay videos I'm less than impressed.

Although Aion looks interesting, it gives me a sense of a Korean grind fest... so i'm somewhat put off by it. I haven't been keeping up with Tabula Rasa at all... just waiting for Warhammer...

Woohoo! One more week, I've already preordered it..
The beta was awesome.
Anyone else getting it?

A new game from Richard Garriott, the myth behind Ultima? I am tempted.

I thought it was great when I was playing.
Of course, different people have different opinions.
/will be playing for months

Yeah, willeh, it's pretty awesome. I remember defending a CP.. which was too easy with all the people around, I hope it gets harder as you get to higher levels.. Well, it was a noob outpost, of course. But the variety of enemies that attack, all the Dropships, and the neat story all combine to make a really cool experiance.. Also, the shooting really seems like a TPS. You can take cover behind shit and take less damage. And you can go up to them and pistol-whip them. I think I might go medic when the game is released... I'm going to the end of beta event on Friday, and maybe even see teh General British!!! ZOMGAGFOFH

Whoo! End of beta event tomorrow!
:D
/doublepost

Is it just me or is this game completely terrible.. the combat is stale and doesn't come CLOSE to what a veteran of the FPS genre would expect - in fact it reminds of of post combat-upgrade Star Wars Galaxies, it's just HORRIBLY static and completely unresponsive. The role playing elements are a rehash of every other grind-fest mmorpg out there, only with a generic sci-fi coat of paint. Yahtzee nailed it right on the head with his beta review.

What a colossal disappointment, Garriot can do better.. can't he?

Planetside does mmorpg combat better - WoW does mmorpg role-playing better. Where does this leave Tabula Rasa? In an endless circle jerk of fail, propagated by an extremely competitive and increasingly over-crowded (and uninteresting) MMO market.

So, that was it, the end of the beta. Poor TR.. Anyways, it'll be back in a week or so! Ah man, the end of beta event was frantic and just plain awesome. I was killed by Richard Garriott himself! Oh the honors. I took a few screenshots. General British managed to pwn us all, I think he got killed at the end, though. Wow.. nice storyline. Garriott really is a nerd.. He was all RP'ing and everything..
Hell, I was too.

Stalker! Bitches to take down!

General British himself! After taking this shot, I got pwnt.

A British clone. He only killed me once. We killed him a few times!

It was great.
:D

Cool event, It's nice to have him be so closely involved with the community - even if his name is plastered right on the box (who better to market an mmorpg than the lord british himself :p).

I've enjoyed the game so far - and I managed to get halfway to the level cap during the beta.

I mean, primarily it's an MMORPG, so you shouldn't expect a FPS game. That said, there is a degree of aim and tactical positioning involved. What I actually enjoy most about the combat is its speed. I always ended up playing the high-dps classes in MMOs because ever since UO, combat has innately been slow.

This is not the case in Tabula Rasa. You can take most solitary MOBs down in a matter of seconds - which is where it throws a bit of a curve. Except for certain cases (stealth armor), many MOBs can see you almost to the limit of your view distance. Most of the time, you will be fighting several of them at once. And the base assaults mentioned by Acepilot are something else entirely.

Over the full length of an assault, several waves of at least thirty Bane will drop in, often with the trailing wave including a named elite. I was taken aback the first time I experienced one because there are quite a few enemy types that do not otherwise show up in the low level area. It was my first taste of having to actually understand damage types relationships because several members of the assault have immunities or other curveballs they can throw at you. And all of these things you have to consider very quickly when an attack happens.

On the topic of quests, anyone that says it's the standard MMO fare has obviously not played more than the first two or three levels. Yes, there will be collection quests and kill quests (though very few of the latter) - it's to be expected - but these are actually a minority. Many of those that do exist are actually spiced up by unexpected sub-plots. Of the more memorable and unique: setting a beacon that cues an arial bombing of a Thrax landing pad; a very large version of simon-says; literally translating three eloh phrases in order to select the proper exit; pushing into the heart of a cyborg factory under the fire of dozens of machina, each replaced within seconds of their death, to destroy the exposed power core of the manufacturing plant itself, culminating in a healthy explosion that wipes out the remaining swarm.
