Tim 'The Man' Sweeney should require no introduction around here, but in case you didn't know and were afraid to ask, Tim is of course our favorite Founder and President of Epic Games, and he's been known to toss the old C++ compiler around for a spin, every now and then :) Today Tim goes deep into language and 3D technology territory:

Question 1: With hardware rendering speed growing at a rapid pace, how much of an extra strain is this putting on the art developers to keep up? Are there any unique custom tools that the latest Unreal Engine comes with that you are especially proud of?

Tim: Art requirements are going up dramatically with the coming generation. The content we're building in Unreal Engine 3 looks perhaps 10 times better than in the previous generation, but it's taking 3-4 times longer to model such high-polygon objects. Our art requirements are approaching what you see in movies; they are perhaps a factor of 4 lower right now, but in the two previous generations our detail was tens and hundreds of times lower!

:)

damn it will probably take like 10 years to make a super good game then :D

Yeah, I think you're going to be pretty helpless as developer/modder in the future without ZBrush.

This may mean the eventual death of amateur mods as the art requirements for next-gen tech (modeling, textures, etc.) will simply be too great for any part-time team to compete with.

Indeed, quite cool.

I live about 20 minutes from Epic Game's studio!

lol hes only lucky if hes a friend or beta tester or something, because other than that hes no difference to them as you and me :)

But he can go out to the building and make a sign saying(and protest) "I want to see UE3!! It looks soo good please let me in!"
And chant it!
