Shacknews have the first Preview for the upcoming remake of Badlands for Team Fortress 2. Badlands was one of the best Team Fortress : Classic maps as longtime FPS gamers will recall it was a CTF map, unlike the new version which will be control point-based map.

The placement of the control points definitely emphasizes this new element of play in Badlands. No longer restricted to simply hauling a flag back to your base via the tunnels and deeper routes of its original incarnation, the new map is much more fast-paced and grueling than its forebear. The bridge that separated the bases from one another is the locale of the new map's neutral control point, now situated among a series of rail cars.

Sounds like a good map, albeit it seems to encourage soldier and demoman classes more than any others. I shouldn't criticize until the map is actually released but there really doesn't sound like anything about the map that seems advantageous for the pyro.

You really should wait for the map to come out. For all you know there might be a few corridor chokepoints, where the pyro would be deadly.

Awww... it's not a ctf map :( Oh well i'll see how it plays first before I moan and whine.

My TF2 just went updated. :D

I know it should not be it, anyway.

Team Fortress 2

* Added new option for medigun beam to the Multiplayer->Advanced dialog. If on, the medigun beam will stay attached to the current target without the need to hold down the fire button
* Added new option for the sniper rifle to the Multiplayer->Advanced dialog. If disabled, the sniper rifle won't re-zoom after firing a zoomed shot
* Added "nextlevel" server cvar. If set to a valid map name, server will change to that map during the next changelevel
* Fixed PerfUI being used as a type of wall-hack on servers without sv_cheats set to 1
* Reduced Granary spawn advantage for capping the middle point
* Fixed players turning into "Scout" model after lagouts (and a variety of related issues, such as disappearing doors)
* Fixed obscure crash related to resolution changing
* Gave machinima creators access to "tf_testvcd" and "tf_testrr" commands for playing scenes on characters
* SDK Launcher now has a drop list of engine versions in addition to a drop list of games/mods. This eliminates the need to specify engine version as a launch option

Fairly significant update, will probably be in the news soon.

I need more CTF maps, I'm sorry but as much as CP is an ok and workable game system I want MORE CTF MAPS. I like the simplicity, kthx.

I agree, the only problem is that actually capturing or rigorously defending the briefcase is detrimental to people's scores and very difficult, so people like playing sniper wars instead. In a CP map there is a far greater urge to win than get points. The odd CTF map would be welcome, but CP maps are often the most fun. Especially attack/defend CP maps, which this one unfortunately isn't.

Great, now I can heal when being soldier.

Mm, a remake of Spylands. Although, perhaps the name will no longer be so fitting if the terrain is "leveled off" and some of the cliffs have been removed. I am rather surprised--though not disappointed--that they decided to make it a control point map. It really seems as if Valve would rather completely forget Team Fortress originated as a CTF game.

The ultimate irony would be if they released a Canal Zone 3, and it was a CTF map--Canalzon for QWTF and Cz2 for TFC were command point maps (Cz2 was in fact the only official command point map for TFC).

This is uncanny - I was thinknig about this map last night whilst playing TF2. I remembered it with fondness but couldn't remember the name. Excellent news. Can't wait.

I'm not sure if this is good or bad news... I loved Badlands from tfc and I do like CP maps. However, I loved Well from tfc, but I hate the tf2 version. I really hope it turns out great, but at the same time I wish they'd just leave it as a ctf map.

I guess there is always this to fall back on if one wants the classic map.
