Ok i dont know much about computers so i got a question about the new ati card that is going o be bundled with hl2. Im running on a AMD athlon XP (2.0 ghz) and currently i have a geforce 4 MX420. So my question is is my processor going to be powerful enough to run ati's new card? If not can u suggest what i upgrade it to? Alright thanks for the help sorry if it was a little off-topic.

A Pentium III 800Mhz would be enough to power it. Dude, Im runnin an Athlon XP 1800+ (1.54Ghz), and it runs flawlessly.

EDIT!
Wait...I misunderstood his question...move along there's nothing to see here!

yea your processor won't be the bottleneck there...i'd say the cutoff for cpu bottleneck is gonna be around 1.5 GHz judging by the minimum specs and the benchmarks.

anything 2.0Ghz and above should run great with a high end vid card

Your CPU will be a bottleneck on that system. However, you'll get much better performance then you would with that GF4MX (which is really just a souped up GF2 and doesn't have the featureset of the GF4 ti line). Additionally, you can continue using it when you upgrade your mobo/cpu/ram. :p

EDIT: Read the recent reviews of HL2 on the 9800 and you'll see that a 2GHz IS a bottleneck.

well yea it'll be a bottleneck...as the vid card will be capable of more than the cpu...but as far as hl2 is concerned...the cpu won't get taxed that much.

if you get ati's newest card and have a 2.0GHz cpu, yes...your cpu will be the slow spot but slow in this case is still MUCH faster than most people will have :D

800MHz would be a huge bottleneck....

Well yea no kiddin, i thought he was just asking if his CPU would support the card itself.

Could an admin plz move this topic to the hardware section... it's get a bit messy :/

Alright thanks guys.Im thinkin ill just end up buying it seperately, Im really eager to see whats in that collectors edition :p.

800mhz wont be a bottleneck dumbasses.. 800mhz would give you lower framerates when rendering all the physics and etc but wont bottleneck the gfx at all. Why do you think a crappy CPU with a high end gfx card does much better than a great CPU with an average gfx card in 3dmark?

my bud has a asus A7N8X, barton 2500,1 GB of corsair ddr400 & a 9700pro and benchmarks 15,600 in 3Dmark 2001 you will be fine.

I have asus A7N8X barton 2800, 1 GB of corsair ddr400 & a TI4800SE and my benchmark is 13,800.

see the ATI differance!!!!!

harhar: watch the language.

a 2ghz system will run it fine. (both hl2 and any vid card you get)
