Technocalypse

Watching the second episode atm (I think I saw the 1st on NGC). Interesting subject but it's set a bit too black-and-white imho. Some borderline psychos as 'experts' and that Richard Seed character is pure evil.

Anyhoo, thanks for posting. Should lead to an interesting discussion. I'll post my opinion after watching.

Richard Seed: *emotionless stare* "We will become gods! PERIOD!"

He's probably very pissed off that he won't live long enough to be "helped" by these technologies.

Some of the stuff is fudged out of context and exaggerated, others are simply impossible, such as nanobots in the way they suggest.

Seed even went further. He said something like: I'll kill people that obstruct me from becoming a god. Scary dude. I much more agree with the guy (couldn't see who it was) who said that we're experiencing the birth pains of three scientific revolutions: genetic technology, motorized transport ultimately leading to spaceflight and computer AI to handle it all. It is a lot to handle and there are always people not wanting to adapt. The car almost bumping into the Amish horse drawn cart was a very good way to illustrate what probably will be happening in the coming centuries. I don't think we will have a big technology vs. theology war as some of the wackos suggested. Sure, you'll have conflicts about the ethics and dangers of technological advancement and there will be strong (and very likely religiously inspired) opposition, but I don't think humanity will ultimately decide this issue through physical means. It will probably be more a case of technologically aided evolution.

On a side note, I think that people like that Aubrey de Grey who want to use cryonics for a defrosting in a better future, are making one false assumption: that the people in f.e. the year 2509 will want them in their time. If I'd live 500 years from now and was confronted with a human popsicle and a note attached to it reading 'defrost me pl0x so I can join you guise', I'd say he should gtfo. I'll give his body a proper burial or cremation, but I don't see what I would gain by reviving him. Yeah, maybe one or two persons for historical purposes, but droves of people? Nah, I don't think so.

He's like a real life Dr. Breen <3

As for the whole techological singularity thing... I think I'll be one of those they politely called "humanish". I'm fine with how things are now thank you very much...

The constant somewhat sinister music is pretty fail.

I was just thinking about the Singularity theory and basically I'm glad I did a search. Its kinda scary where we are headed as humans...but its also perfectly natural to want to know dark things

no no no NO!!...until our current economic/social system exist i want no part of it. because guess who will make all the rules...yes that's right, it's not you.

didn't it ever occur to you that the maker of the singularity "machine/entity" would make one voice a bit louder, like you know, his? enjoy being a drone

Kurzweil is a crank. He came to our university to do a presentation on the singularity, and when people started asking him about things like the deceleration of moore's law, inherent limitations on exponential growth, and the failure of his past extrapolations, etc. he got very hostile and just blew them off.

However, his idea does hold some weight. I don't think that the "singularity" will be as bad or as shocking as he proposes, but I think we will see some serious changes. I believe that the growth of technology will be logarithmic rather than exponential. After we get "super-intelligences," they will be able to vastly improve themselves in a short amount of time, but very qucikly they will run out of resources and have to struggle to improve themselves.
