after a few years of wearing braces, i want to go to the dentist to get this done:

lnk (scroll to the bottom of that page

but are there any risks of something going wrong afterwards? I imagine not, but my mother, who is a little irrational at times, says she doesn't want me to do that to my teeth because they can probably deteriorate. BS?

edit: please don't spam this thread.

Your teeth have a protective enamel coating that once removed means the inside of the tooth is exposed, and could end up having a cavity form e.t.c
Only get your teeth buggered with if you need to for medical reasons, don't do it for looks or anything.
I've never had any dentistry in my life so i'm prob wrong person to give advice but nvm.

Possibly, but I doubt it'd be as strong or compliant with the rest of your body as the natural stuff is.

The natural stuff is replenished at a very slow rate.
This is why normal teeth stay exactly how they are (unless you eat stones)
And why replacement teeth always wear down, even if made from a harder material than normal teeth.

wait, you've never been to a dentist? Not even for regular dental work(cleaning, checking for cavities, etc...)? Dude, do yourself a favor and go to a dentist. You'll thank me when you're 80 and still have all your teeth.

I haven't been to a dentist in the past 15 or so years of my life. My teeth aren't crooked or anything... but I probably have cavities.

...eh?

I guess it depends how much they file/fill in. I mean it doesn't look like much there, but as always, consult the professionals who get paid for knowing this stuff. ;)

I don't even get where that image comes from. We probably have a better dentistry health system in place than you do thanks to the NHS...

Japan also has really bad orthodontics/dentistry

...i dont get the link...why are there two pictures??

I have perfect teeth all over, i stopped getting check ups when i was 15 because i didn't need them.
Throughout my life i have never had tooth ache once, never had any problem whatsoever, my teeth are perfect.

When i used to go when i was younger it was "a1" for every tooth.

I also know how to check my teeth at home for hardness, quality and plaque build up.......i can take measures to sort my own teeth out.

I guess some people are just unlucky with their teeth, i have been blessed with a good set however and i intend to keep them this way by the way i constantly clean them in my mouth.

Aye, well as long as you don't have f'ed up teeth that you keep clean, then you should be fine. However, the rest of England/Japan.....

ps. For some reason, I find japanese girls amazingly hot...*boioioioioioinnngggg!!!!*

I got draged to the dentist every so oftern by my mother, but at 18 I was allowed to choose (Since I was an adult) and desided to stop going, 2 years later my teeth are fine. Meh.

I honestly didn't see much of a difference in those two pictures, other than the right one having slightly smoother tips. The difference is hardly noticable.

I go to the dentist for a checkup every 6 months like they recommend. It feels good for my teeth to have that clean feeling every now and then. Free Health Care, Woo!! :D :P

me too.

I never go to the dentist's. I feel no need for it.

that's me in the pictures. had two different dentists tell me that I should file down my teeth because my "bite" didn't line up properly and I didn't naturally grind my teeth down like most adults. never had braces (obviously) and nothing wrong with my teeth otherwise. did it just for cosmetic reasons last august.

no side effects. it did take a while to get used to the feeling of my tongue on my front teeth because I was so used to the ridges. and I still can't figure out a good way to open up a bag of potato chips with my teeth because the tops and bottoms line up differently.

hope that helps!

whoa, the internet is a small place.

thanks for your help, this is good info i needed to know. So no serious side effects? Some of my friends had this done too after having their braces removed. Is it painful? i'll try to talk my parents into this. thanks again.

I need to do that too...to bad i dont got free dental care anymore :(

didn't hurt my teeth or feel any sensation at all while the dentist was grinding them down. my jaw got a bit sore from holding my mouth open for so long. probably took 10 minutes or so.

because this was "cosmetic", insurance wouldn't pay for it. but I had to have a little compound put into one of my back teeth where the gum was receded because of brushing too hard, so the doctor threw in the smoothing for free.

no one really noticed the jagged-ness before and it never really bothered me. I always thought it made my smile "unique" because it wasn't perfect. and since I had it done, no one's come up to me to say "wow, you're teeth are so straight."

no regrets having it done, but no big whoop either. but if you do it, be sure to take pictures so we all can see!
