If I had to have sex with an old guy in a big hat, it'd be Terry Pratchett.

MR SHINE
HIM DIAMOND

//crap - wrong forum. Move me pls.

I fully endorse this product and/or event.

And I second it.

The only problem that I find with his books is I get too absorbed in the story and so I read the endings too fast, which leads to me being befuddled and having to read them again. Still, he writes the most awesome books I have ever read, and I've read 1984.

Psht, leave it in here, I wouldn't have noticed it otherwise.

Possibly my favourite author. I'ma buyin' his hat when he goes ;(

I loved the Discworld books when I was a bit younger. Haven't really been following them lately. While I love the characters of the AM City Watch (Guards! Guards! and Men at Arms being superb), I felt that Pratchett wrote a few too many books on those in recent years, considering that my favourites of his are the great one-offs like Small Gods and Pyramids.

My absolute favourite is Night Watch; I tend to find that his newer ones have a... really strange effect when reading them. Not quite sure how to describe it, but Thud! and Making Money were read almost in like an altered state of mind. You know, deriving from reading the books. Not from questionable substances or anything.

WHAT I REALLY WANT TO SEE IS HIM TO WORK WITH NEIL GAIMAN AGAIN

OR POSSIBLY

TO SUMMON DOUGLAS ADAMS FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE AND THEN GET TOGETHER WITH NEIL GAIMAN

AND THEN THERE WILL BE THE HOLY TRINITY OF BRITISH AUTHORS. FOREVER!

Anything with the Guards and Death have me glued from start to finish. Pyramids, Sorcery and Small Gods also stand out. I know what you mean though, Jintor - his more recent books have been different somehow. A little more serious perhaps - like he's trying to put something across more than usual. Nevertheless, I can't think of a single discworld book that isn't utterly endearing and full of magic and rate his ability to create loveable charatcers better than anyone.

DON'T EVEN SAY THAT.

:(

He... he can't. ;(

His books might get sorta interesting in the next couple of years...

I think if there's ever been a hero in my life, it'd have to have been Terry Pratchett.

And yeah, the most recent books have a lot more gravity in them. Nightwatch was a personal favourite.

Reaper Man (Even though I didn't really like the thing about the shopping centre) and Hogfather =D

His books have always been interesting. :P

I don't think theres been a Discworld book I've actually disliked. Theres been one or two that I wasn't quite so eager to get stuck into - The Truth, for one, I started reading then couldn't get hooked so I went off and reading something else. I came back to it and loved it all the way through.

Sam Vimes is blatently the best character, though. I'm telling you - James Coburn as Vimes, Tony Robinson as Nobby and Nick Frost as Colon = so much win. This formula doesn't work because Coburn is dead, but man, he was perfect for Sam.

This would be interesting. Good Omens was superb. Pratchett obviously reads and respects Gaiman, since he shamelessly copied Neverwhere's Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar (in Mr. Brick and Mr. Tulip, IIRtheir namesC). The only problem is that they would have a hard time making a worthy successor to GO if they were to collaborate once more.

Mr Croup and Vandemar were excellent. Good Omens too. I must have read it 4 or 5 times and it always strikes me how little of Neil Gaiman there appears to be in it. tbh he's a bit of a strange author - his books are nearly all great, but they seem like they've been written by different people.

Hasn't Pratchett stoped writing due to his Alzheimer's?

Death and Lord Vetinari are the best characters in the world.

No. I believe he said he'd be able to write too more books while he "aten't dead".

;(
Wow, this is completely new to me...! Very sad.

On the bright side it means I may actually be able to catch up again on reading all the Discworld novels at some point.

I heard that he had 3 books in the works, and a computer for each one. But whenever he'd sit down at one he couldn't remember which it was and writing was just getting too hard. It's really awful. If there's one thing I hope I don't get (other than fatal diseases) it's Alzheimer's.

coincidentally, heres some very recent news on Pratchett.

On 8 June 2008, news reports indicated that Pratchett had a strange experience, which he described as: "just beyond all that, on the other side of physics, there just may be the ordered structure from which everything flows" and "I don’t actually believe in anyone who could have put that in my head".

- Wiki.

I can't appear to find the letter Terry Pratchett sent to the community. It was on a website somewhere around here...

Edit: I believe this is the website and this is the letter.

;(

Yes, that's because he can write different styles and I love all of them. :3

Man, even on his I ATEN'T DEAD card he's witty and hilarious.

Only read The Colour of Magic and The Light Fantastic so far, but I loved them and my local WH Smith has tons of Pratchett books.

Go to your local library and take as many as you can out :|

You will not regret it.

Actually, what I gathered from what he said about his Alzheimer's is that it's a rare form which doesn't really affect his memory as much as it effects his motor skills. Although he has said that his typing has slowed down considerably.

Doesn't affect his memory? I read in a newspaper article that he first thought there might be something wrong when he couldn't remember how to spell...er...I don't really remember what the word was. Might have been "also."

I didn't really say it didn't affect his memory at all. Of course it does, but he said that the thing that was giving him the most trouble wasn't exactly memory problems but the loss of motor skills. I don't exactly know where, but I believe it might have been this interview, right here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/aod/shows/rpms/radio4/ontheropes.ram
(I'm too lazy to listen through it again right now, however, everyone should listen to it anyway, it's interesting)

Also, he said in another interview somewhere:

"I don't suffer from memory loss as much as slowness of retrieval."

Which reveals he does have memory problems :(

And yes, spelling words and finding letters on his keyboard is a problem for him.

I'm really sad about the Alziemers (spelling) thing but at least there are the film coming out
:'(

Going Postal is the next film out? Epic win.

What I want to see is NIGHT WATCH.

THAT WOULD BE AWESOME.

And a whole bunch of russian vampire fans would get confused.

That's what I mean. Hogfather and Colour of Magic/Light Fantastic miniseries have been meh.

They're films, not a miniseries, but I won't start an argument.

I heard the Going Postal was the next one, though it hasn't been confirmed...
