HAH! Texas is normal!
"The Texas Board of Education has unanimously come down on the side of evolution. In an 14-0 vote, the board today approved scientifically accurate high school biology textbook supplements from established mainstream publishers — and did not approve the creationist-backed supplements from International Databases, LLC."

Yay, Science! It has never been the responsibility of the school system to teach a subject which has no physical evidence either for or against its existence.

I automatically assumed you mistyped 'Evolution' as 'Creationism'. And had to actually read it again.

I thought it was going to be some cheeky title like "Votes 14-0 Against Creationism... Being Removed From Schools", and when it wasn't I got really confused. Then I read the first line as if they were coming down on Evolution with a banhammer, and that just made things worse. Then... then came the bees.

Goooooooood. Gooooooood.

I wouldn't go so far as to say Texas is "normal" but I'll admit that this does make me feel like they're less insane.

Wow, surprised. Nice job. I wonder if there was a board member change-up over the last couple of years? Or perhaps the people who vote on the science curriculum are different from the ones voting on history, because last I'd heard, the history textbooks were still screwed.

They're just cutting their losses with biology. Next: why the bias towards chemistry instead of alchemy? TEACH THE CONTROVERSY AMERICA.

This sounds like a lobbyist got his fingers into the pie, and the board has been waiting to say 'lolno' until it was absolutely impossible to say they were previously biased against it. 14-0 votes don't happen unless they were already of that opinion already anyway.

in before "I thought it was a onion article" jokes

Tell that to the schools in Poland. Religion is an actual, graded subject. Purely catholic, of course.

Religion was also a class in Australia. Each of the students were divided up according to their religion and taught accordingly. One of my brother's friends was the only Buddhist in the grade, therefore he did not get a class and sat in the corner reading for the entire period.

Really? Are Catholics enough of a majority for that to be feasible?

Religion is a graded subject here too.

why wouldnt it be a graded subject? I went to catholic school and one of our classes was a religious class. it was very possible to fail it

I forced them.

They fought every inch of the way.

Didn't like that evolution stuff being forced down their throats.

I went to a Catholic high school for four years, and yeah, I know. But what I meant to ask was if the Catholic population was enough of a majority to vote those classes into the curriculum.

not in canada. 3 provinces have a separate school system for catholics that can be attended by anyone and paying for it is optional (property taxes; if your kid goes there you pay additional taxes)

Wikipedia said:
Most residents of Poland adhere to the Christian faith, with 89.8% belonging to the Roman Catholic Church.

Norway has a religion (and ethics) class, until recently it had a very strong christian bias. Thanks to a couple of court rulings it's a lot more balanced now.
