guys im sure u remember me with the radeon x850 xl pe pci express video card...well i said its not smooth at all....well i was testing different settings in the game and for some reason when i turned the texture detail to low it gets smoother....a lot smoother....medium is not as smooth but bearable and well u know what happens when i put it on high...now when this game was installed it recommended the texture to go on high....thats whats givin me the trouble...anyone know why it might?....i mean i have 1024 megs of ram and ive tested the ram and its ok....seems like maybe i need some more...i have a 3.2 computer and dont have nothin in background when i play...i have my cable modem on coz they said i have to keep it on....can u explain the texture detail and why it would do this to me?

thanks
lloyd

It gets better, the lower the graphics settings? I wouldn't have a clue.

Do you have the latest video drivers?

How much V-RAM (Video RAM) do you have?

Do you have the latest drivers and bios for all other devices?

Oh, and what resolution are you running it at?

what drivers are you running with the 850? maybe try rolling back a few?

i have the 5.8 drivers....no matter what drivers i used its the same....i have 256 of video ram....yes i have the latest bios and updates....and i run my resolution at 1280x1024...i still think its dell cuz ive had worse video cards but they all did the same thing...they werent smooth...and it basically was sluggish right when a save game is loaded or when i started the game for the 1st time....and i can hear the sound stutter when it does that so who knows

thats very odd, my x700 pwns hl2, try a lower resolution with AA on. do you really really reallyNEEEEEEDDDDD it that high? the AA shouldnt be much of a performance hit and will smooth everything out

Correct me if im wrong, but doesn't dell use cheaper ram which runs at higher latencys? Even though you've got a Gb of it, it a Gb of low quality ram.

I'm in the same suitation with my dell.

I run HL2 maxxed out on my Dell and I only have the X800-XL. Lloyd, I've been following your problems for a while and I also just got a list of your posts and went through them.. I think the stuttering might be due to your audio, which we haven't talked about yet.. Do you have onboard sound? Have you noticed if it generally stutters only when loading a new sound? What happens to people that have the audio stutter problem is that the game stutters only when loading a new sound.. Like on my old PC I had this problem and whenever I would start the game, it would stutter every time a new sound was loaded. Eventually as all the common sounds you hear get loaded into memory, the problem goes away, unless a new sound is heard and has to be loaded.. Is this the kind of stuttering you have? Your problems might be unrelated to the video card, because that video card should pwn HL2. The only other thing could be a driver problem. I think we can figure out your problem, but you need to stay up to date with the topic, try the things we say, and come back and report what happened.. I just see you've posted about this before but I see little feedback from you on the suggestions that we've made.

Also you mentioned you tried different drivers and different video cards.. Have you completely cleaned out your drivers each time you have updated the driver or changed the card? You can't just install 5.8 OVER 5.7, you need to completely remove 5.7using the Catalyst remover tool before you can install new ones. I bet theres probably tons of left over driver crap which are causing your problem. You should uninstall Cat 5.8, then run the Catalyst driver cleaner remover, then check to make sure theres no other leftover drivers from the past... then reinstall the 5.8s.

Yup, its the dell, they suck ass at building computers

lol y do u think there so cheap to buy they use all of the cheap prob. never heard of parts

oh yes sir i clean out my drivers....theres an uninstall utility when u install the driver....sir when i 1st load a saved game or start game for 1st time i can hear the sound stutter....i have a audigy 2 value sound card...its not my sound card...i think that guys right when he said its the dell....i dont know if gateways any different...cuz ive had dells all my life and i thought getting a new video card would help but it dont...i know of a few people who had this card and a dell and same problems....ive bumped my resolution to 1024 and it still does it...

Well, my XPS arrived today (specs in sig) and i have to say, its f****** mint imo, havn't had any problems at all.

can u find dual channel ram in stores?.....is this really cheap ram?

Yeah Dual Channel Ram is available in stores, the prices vary depending on wether you want DDR or DDR2 etc etc and also the store you are getting it from.
