The Team Fortress 2 official blog has been updated with a new way to allow the community to contribute.[br]

In exchange for your silence, we are now accepting submissions for fan-designed TF2 items and avatars, immortalizing you in the Team Fortress 2 pantheon forever while keeping our jobs safe. Pending approval, your item will get added to your backpack, and cycled into the random item drops in-game. Blow up stuff using a weapon you created! Kill an enemy, then let him know he died in a hat you designed! Weapons, hats, avatars -- designed by you, used by the entire TF2 community.
[br]
If you feel like helping out the community, there is a visual theme guideline here. All weapons, avatars, and hats that are selected will be stored in an online gallery, which will allow others to view and comment on them.

Wonder if they will ever have any of the weapons enter the mix, seeing as though it would really screw with the balance issues...

I think it's just models that the fans are doing, not actual stats or anything.

I don't know what to make of this. Wonder how much contribution they will end up using ...

this looks really cool, can't wait to use it.

Though I probably never will.

Can't wait to see what other's have put into it...

They're obviously not going to accept every offer coming in.

There'll be people who put out ideas that might actually be balanced.

I know this is probably in response to everyone making their own fan items and showing Valve anyway, but as Darkside said: "Do the thinking part of our job plz"

Damn, I'd probably be bad at this, I presume you use Hammer to make it?

Anyone else want a vanilla TF2 setting?

Maybe I'm the only one who stopped playing this wonderful game after the class updates...

I'll probably try and contribute if I think of anything cool enough. Would be nice to see an item I created in-game :D

someone is going to submit big black dildo replacing scout's bat

No. Hammer is used to make maps.

To make models you will need a 3d modeling application such as XSI, Maya or 3d studio max. Texturing will require image editing software such as Gimp or Photoshop.

There are certain servers which run vanilla TF2 mods.

Of course, going back to when pipe bomb launcher had 6 shots is ****ing rediculous.

do the item is only model and texture of must be introduced in the game whit its rendering atyle and such?
