TF2 crashing - can't get beyond the main menu

My friend is having a problem with TF2, said he:

ok, i started up TF2, and it seemed to work just fine. i clicked on options, and the menu froze and the sounds f**ked up. then i got a blank screen and [the windows send error report screen]

Same thing happens when he starts a game, he can't get passed the main menu.

Does anyone have any ideas please?

He says he's not sure on the spec but it's a Alienware Sentia M3450.

I'm pretty sure that'll put him under the minimum spec, if this is accurate. Is that so?

He's about as tech savvy as you are polite . I've sent him to http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest to test his system.

Intel GMA. That is the problem.

Suggestion: Buy a new PC.

I figured it would be. I'm suprised it passed that test but I still think it's simply underspecced.
