The other day I watched the E3 video of Battlefield 2, the sequel to Battlefield 1942. It left me wondering, based on the limited information available, how will TF2 differ from Battlefield 2? I haven't seen mention of VoIP in Battlefield 2, so that's one potential difference. Others?

For the record, I will certainly be playing both.

Cant much say anything on that since all the information on TF2 we have are like 5 years old. But anyway, TF2 will be more "unreal" without much of this "realistic" stuff. It won't be yet another war game. Or else it won't be a Team Fortress ;/ (I hope ;<)

Wrong forum.

Moved to General Gaming

BF2 will be awsome, dice always pull some fancy shit... but you cant judge a game you dont know a thing about ie. TF2

I think battlefield 2 is best but TF2 aint far behind, the cool thing in bf2 is that everything is destructable.

I have no clue.... but last time I chcked TF2 had no vehicles :(

I'm tired of the battlefield games, crappy netcode ruined Vietnam for me.

Well seeing as we have practically no recent info on TF2 it's impossible to compare the two. But judging from what the original TF was like there's not even anything to compare. It's barely even the same genre of FPS.

I have extremely high hopes for TFC2 - objective based online play with classes is my thang :)

BF2 looks nice - let's just hope the fighting is better than it was in bf (which was crap - and unsuitable for clan play. Pretty good for publics tho :) )

well, considering the last time anyone saw it, it wasn't on the source engine, i think its a safe bet that it will have vehicles in it now ;)

EDIT: fergot to say. ill go with tf2 hands down. this is going by previous games, and no footage or screens whatsoever. i'de prefer to play TFC to BF or BF:V anyday.

EDIT2: dont know wether TF2's gonna be sci-fi, modern warfare, or whatever, but it better be awesome whatever it is. if they get it anywhere near to what TFC is, then i think im gonna have a new favourite online game :D

What makes BF unsuitable for clan play? I only ever play on publics, but it seems like it would be good for clans.

I didn't like Battlefield1942 as there was no really point to it, it was just capture the flag. I hope Team Fortress is more along the lines of breaching walls and planting explosives and blowing things up than flags.

Battlefield games aren't fun.

Team Fortress games are fun.

I should qualify this by saying that I play Desert Combat exclusively. I don't play vanilla BF1942 at all.

BF series suck for infantry combat, TF series own for infantry combat. Add good infantry dynamic + vehicles and you have a great MP game... meanwhile Dice seems adamant on using the same crappy infantry combat in all their BF games which are all reshashes of the original set in different time periods...

Needless to say I think the BF series is overhyped as great games. Awesome vehicular combat and great air combat (for the most part) but shoddy infantry control and feel.

Who said BF2 had totally destructable environments?

PS: I still can't get over the fact that in the BF2 videos they still use the shoddy infantry stuff... look at the ones where there's rebels in the rooftops and one of them opens up with a machinegun... Notice how it looks almost exactly the same as their past BF games and they didn't even bother changing it so the bipod is retracted when firing from the hip.

Gah...

Oh yeah, because the bipod issue in an alpha build is the way to judge it.
For more info on BF2 (specifically why its not anything like a rehash):

Don't know ANYTHING about TF2 other than its existence, so what can I say? I doubt it will be as vehicle-rich as BF2, but that doesn't make it worse.

i love BF1942, but hate veitnam. but from the screens and footage of BF2, i have to say i like it very much. Mind you... i only discovered TFC the other day and it has kept me entertained for ages... engineers own... the potential for a sequel is overwhelming!

I'm judging from what I've seen... Companies don't usually show you promotional videos unless most of the stuff they show is complete. The bipod being like that has been around since the original battlefield, they didn't fix it in the expansions, patches, or even BF:V so its actually very likely that they just don't care. That's fine with me... what isn't fine is how infantry combat is handled and I do hope they improve it for BF2.

I gain nothing from developers making games I don't enjoy... I'm rooting for them but Dice has shown me time and time again that the games they make are not very original for the most part. Riding on the wave created by battlefield...

Well seeing as how they've only made Battlefield and Battlefield: Vietnam, I really doubt that two is enough to make it a pattern. That essentially just means you didn't like Vietnam any better than the original.

The last time I saw TF2, it used the Half-Life engine...

Are you ****ing kidding?

BF42 is the best organised MP gaming experiance ive ever had.

blows CS and TFC away in terms of having to work together....

But, as others have pointed out, the close fighting (on foot) sucks. No exageration, it's really bad compared to many other shooters. This alone will put off most, if not all, top clan players. The maps are also very large (which is great for publics) , but too big for clan games (which need to be tight, with key bottlenecks to cater for small teams. 6 v 6 - 8 v 8 etc).

Don't get me wrong - it's a fun game and the vehicles rock :) It's just not a good competitive title.

Well the greatest advantage of BF2 is that it will actually be released.

No offense but I must say this

WHAT THE F*** IS SO GREAT ABOUT VEHICLES....... "WOHOO LOOK AT ME MA I CRASHED INTO A WALL"

Well...it is great about not having vehicles?

Not being able to drive isn't a good excuse for taking away/not including vehicles ;)

Vehicles add variety. Which is essential these days in my opinion. I am getting board of all the usual rubish. Almost everything infantry based has allready been done. Vehicles are new and exciting. :)

The first time you see a copter drift overhead between building roofs with its guns blaring, or watch a group of tanks slug it out you realize why people enjoy vehicles so much. :D

I dont think there will be any vehicles in TF2...takes away the gameplay they are reaching for. Surely people will make their own maps with whatever but i doubt it, hell they might even do like what unreal did...maps like DM-map CTF-map ONSLAUGHT-map...just characterize them by what type...thatd be cool.

i got the idea a while ago that tf2 would have vehicles. maybe not. Remember, we don't know what tf2 will bring, but we do know what bf2 will bring. i wouldn't prematurely judge between the games until we actually have the games or at the very least some nfo from valve (they promised they would after hl2 release).

frankly, i don't care about either at the moment. hl2, that has my sole focus.

I got the impression that vehicles were a very real possiblity in TF2, but I'd guess they're fewer and much different than in a BF-like game.

All these judgements when we hardly know anything about TF2....we have info thats half a decade old and thats it.

wich is why you new to play in WAW http://bf1942.battleforeurope.com/

25vs25 and more organised than 90% of clans. :E

Looks good fun :)

(still don't believe you about the organised bit tho ;) )

Okay let me rephrase what I said. Vehicles can be fun and add new levels of gameplay. I remember TFC for CTF matches and I know it's been done in Halo but Vehicles can really make a CTF match a pain.

Now in the other Gameplay situations (TFC was incredibly flexaible for mappers) Like the one where you would move towards your objective capture it, start from there and move to capture the next one. Just like Unreal Tournament's Assualt Game mode vehicles can really fit in.

As I've said before, it's pretty hard to know what to expect from TF2, because Team Fortress 1 really was pretty generic compared to modern games. It introduced class based MP play and had a general CTF theme most of the time, but that was pretty much it as far as distinguishing it from other mods, and it is now many years old while lots of other new class-based MP games have come and gone in the meantime.

In comparison to BF2, my guess is that TF2 will be a lot more "compact" as in the maps will be tighter and have lots more objectives. The BF games are really more like massive war sims. The TF brand seems less interested in realism. But really, we have absolutely no way to judge: we have no idea what direction they decided to go.

No BF2 is not fully destructable.

Yeah it was quite bad...so I stoped playing as well, plus they just started to patch the game now that its been out for months....however when POE comes out I think it will be a little more fun.

Battlefield2 > TF2 hands down, BF2 will pwn TF2. If you disagree, You Are WRONG.

if TF2 uses SOURCE there is no way it can look as good as BF2(did you see the screens?wowzers...)

gameplay is another thing.....we know almost nothing about either game when it comes to gameplay.
