..For only Gaming. Yesterday my mum went on my PC and my less-than-1-year-old 19" CRT screen smoked, sparked and blew up so i'm now using my brothers 17" CRT screen to use my PC, but anyway, my query is, are TFT good for games because i heard a while ago that they are'nt very good for gaming because they don't respond fast enough. Is this true and how noticable is it if it is true?

I walked around every single computer shop in Warrington yesterday and none of them sell CRT screens anymore...well, very limited in even PC World! and i noticed that they all sold multiple TFT screens but i'm weary because of what i've heard and i really can't live with a 17" screen after using a 19" for almost a year so my only option is a TFT screen, right?. I know that online you can buy CRT 15" - 22" screens but if TFT isn't as bad as i've heard it is i'd much rather have sleeky TFT screen :)

I've been looking around Aria (Thanks to Murray_H's thread) and these ones are about how much i'd be willing to pay, but are they any good for Gaming (the only game i play just about is WoW)...http://www.aria.co.uk/ProductsList.asp?Category=29&SubCat=&Name=&Page=1&SortBy=2

I'll list specs because it does'nt allow direct linking...

All help would be very much appreciated, a new screen is a real must-must, my brother comes back 9th May and will want his monitor back! thanks for any help. /Edit | What do i look for mainly, the response time? whats the difference between 16ms and 10ms? will it be noticable to an untrained eyeball?. Also, i'm using an X800pro GFX card, does this support DVI (if i'm correct, thats GFX side right?).

If the monitor is below 16ms you probably won't tell the difference, especially with playing WOW. ;)
Some monitors actually use less color to get down to 12ms/8ms etc while the 16ms have the full range of colors. Depends on what screen that brand used and who the manufacture is.

Samsung, BenQ and Viewsonic are all good LCD brands.

FYI a 17in LCD is only 1 inch smaller than a 19in CRT. Because a CRT counts from the edge of the tub to the other (which is partly behind the frame) while LCDs count what you see.

Best thing to do is to see the monitor in person..i found that alot of monitors will distort colour when images move across the screen fast...there AREW a few out there that are darn fantastic looking tho!

Regardless, i still ended up buying two CRT's for the price of one LCD. Space is the biggest factor, and i have lots of deskspace.

I'd stick with what ASUS here says...16ms or less for gaming...but i think 16ms is still walking the line.

if you have money to put, the dell 20 and 24er FPW widescreens are seriously to consider.

Thanks for the replies. So a 19" TFT would actually be 1" bigger than a 19" CRT monitor, if thats the theory?. If so, then i'd rather pay less and get a 17" because right at this time, i'm paying for a holiday, my mums 40th birthday and now, a new damn monitor! :(...I've decided i'll probably get this one if its not crap? http://www.cclonline.com/product-info.asp?product_id=3203&category_id=38&manufacturer_id=0. I noticed that 19" generally have a higher response time, and only the ones out of my price range, even on a good month have a good response time. That 8ms one will be fine for all games? what is a CRT monitor's response time anyway? Thanks.

To be fair, a 16ms model is more than adequate for games. But remember that you'll want to run your games at the panel's native resolution (1280*1024 for 17" ones) if you don't want ugly scaling nastiness.

I've owned two tft's, each had a 12ms response time. I ended up selling them both though, and reverting back to my old 19" crt. For general browsing and slow paced games they are excellent, but the ghosting present in fast paced shooters (especially ET) drove me bonkers.

I'll wait untill no ghosting whatsoever is noticable in any game before getting another.

funny, i have a "cheap" 17" TFT and tbh i don't know if it ghosts or not, and you know what? i don't care:D it has a 25ms response time and i play games like UT2004/HL2:DM and NFSU2 and don't notice any ghosting, i think if you go looking for it it'll be there, but for now i'm 100% happy i went TFT over CRT, it means i have a desk and a good looking PC too, rather than the massive ugly crt case taking up half my room:eek:

I've got a 17" 16ms Sony tft and i dont notice any ghosting. never have. great monitor, i love it.
If you have lots of money get a Dell 21", my mate has one, its awesome, so huge :p

It's your decision, but I honestly prefer CRT due to the quality. The only large downside about CRTs that I see are the heat issues, but if you have a ceiling fan and a good wide open space on your desk, you should be fine (I've had this CRT for three years, now).

Cathode Ray Tube (CRT)

Pros
• Inexpensive
• Multisync Capable
• High Refresh Rates
• Color Clarity and Depth

Cons
• Large Footprint on Desktop
• Very Heavy
• Uses Large Amounts of Energy
• Generate Excess Heat

Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) / Thin Film Transistor (TFT) (All modern LCDs are TFT)

Pros
• Takes up Little Space on Desktop
• Light Weight
• Energy Efficient
• Causing Less Eye Fatigue

Cons
• Expensive (For Quality Monitors; Otherwise Forget It For Cheap Brands)
• Blurry Images Outside Native Resolution
• Motion Blur on Fast Moving Images
• Washed Out Colors

my monitor displays colours better than any CRT i've seen, and i've seen some very expensive ones, it is also much brighter and has much better contrast, without causing me eye strain and migraines like CRT's do. personally i don;t consider £200 for a monitor expensive when you'll happily spend £1000 on a computer and accessories, and £200 will buy you a lot of TFT if you look around enough. perhaps if you spend 12 hrs a day playing fast paced games and are lucky enough not to get eye strain from CRT's they're worth it, but for people who just want a good looking monitor for gaming a couple of hours a day and general use for the rest a TFT is a much better choice IMO

Since when do most people here not play games for twelve hours a day? :p
