Subject: Barney Calhoun... alive or dead?

Dear Mr. Newell,
If you have a second, I'd greatly appreciate it if you can clear up an ongoing argument among the Half Life 2 fan community regarding Barney Calhoun. Did he or didn't he escape City 17 before the Citadel exploded? I believe that one citizen @ White Forest says that he was on the train that got out just in time before the explosion. And considering Gordon's train left even later (but did indeed wreck), can we assume that was Barney's train and he is still alive?
I believe that Barney is an outstanding character in the Half Life series and don't believe that he would be killed off without any mention in the game itself considering Valve's amazing attention to detail and storytelling. If you can answer this for me, it would end a ton of bickering by the fans.

Thanks in advance!

-Andrew

Dear Andrew,

We have learned that answering individual letters to fans does not ever clear up anything in the HL2 fan community. Short of a public announcement regarding Barney's fate, nothing will reach all the people, and nobody will believe anything you say I said to you. So resolution of this matter will have to wait until it is made officially--and the only way these things ever become official is when they are in the game.

Dear Mr. Laidlaw,
Thank you for your very fast reply. I definitely agree with your position that resolution to this issue surrounding a very important character can only be made in-game.

Best regards,
-Andrew Kalionzes

Thanks for your understanding.

(PS: Barney lives.)

I truley do believe Barney made it out alive. Like the letter said, the train left before Gordon and Alyx's left, and they barely made it. And now there's proof that he's alive. I love how Laidlaw did that P.S. thing for some reason

Actually, it was Laidlaw who laid down the law on that one. Pun intended. (Gabe forwards the email to Marc)

I was never really one to think too hard on the Barney Dead or Alive thing, i hadn't played the original Half-Life until earlier today, so i did recognise Barney as one of the 'Main' characters in Half-Life 2, but in my personal book he was just another NPC, this one not dying as easliy. And now... well i'm not even sure if i have encounted Barney in Half-Life yet, if so i probably beat him to death for ammo. All those security gaurd's look the same (go figure)

In fact in Half-Life 2 if not for the mentionings of him i probably would overlook his blue captionings, different look, and even how he seemed (to me) a bit more important then other NPC's. I never really found him much of an important character, though i would count him as a good person to help in a firefight. Perhaps it's just because i've seen him only once, maybe twice in Half-Life 2 and can't tell one gaurd from another in Half-Life.

I know this is subject to canon debate, but HL: Blue Shift decides that Barney is the guard kicking the door at the very beginning of HL1.

In all likelihood, Valve had to give a name for the security guard skin, so named it Barney. They decided to make him one character in HL2, and the name kept.

I played HL2 first, before I played HL1
And once I played HL1 I was like "Oh there's Barney. Oh no, that's Barney. Wait, that one has got to be Barney"
So the first Barney met in HL1 is suppose to be the Barney from HL2?

he's rembering for being more a relaxed laid back guy who's really friendly and was in the good buddy department with gordon

Allot of stubborn people outthere....

I think Michael Shapiro would've said soemthing but nobody would belive him...

Everyone, including Valve, are just in denial. Barney is dead, accept that and move on.

Those emails could be fake, also, I just don't care wether Barney is dead or not. :imu:

Hes alive ok...he will join at the end of ep3 battle along with mister silent Shephard ...ouu yeaa
(mark my words)

Shephard will come back in Halo 4.

"FINISH THE FIGHT, WITH A HUGH PIPEWRENCH!"

i would like to see them implement shepard into Ep3.Better still, they could add him as a playable character in DM.

i think barney have made it out of city 17 safely before the citadel exploded as gordon and alyx took the last train after all civilians were evacuated succesfully, so barney must have been on one of these trains.... but whether he made it to the white forest or not is still unknown. i'm sure barney made it out of city 17 alive but i'm afraid he might have been killed by hunters(or maybe an advisor!) before he made it to the white forest(i really hope i'm wrong!), the death of eli was a huge blow for many of us i just can't afford to lose another of my favourite HL characters!!....i guess we just have to wait and see

You know, just before he died, Barney's last thoughts were about the beer he owed Gordon.

Gordon will never know.

Shephard will come back in Halo 4.

Didn't I read somewhere that Valve has stated that there might be an "Episode 4" (title pending) developed by an outside-Valve developer?

I THINK is a rumor, i'd like to see the source though, with the little info on EP 3 valve has already been announcing, they keep calling it the grand-finale and end of the story arc, so why the hell would they lets some mod team take control? They wouldn't have the resources and skill like valve to make a proper half life game imo and it would be very stupid on valves part to let them. But again, we haven't learned much on episode 3 yet, so why would there already be talk of having another team do episode 4? 3 episodes is a good amount...

Valve officially talked about an outsourced episode 4 but that was years ago, just around the announcement of EP1, so wheter or not it's still valid is unknown.

And as for the "they wouldn't let someone else write the story" and the "no one can make a game as good as they can" parts, first, when Gearbox was making the half life expansions, Laidlaw was still the one writing the story and Gearbox made an AWESOME game out of Op4, you should try it.

I can't say enough good things about this post. Good show.

Also about Episode 4, it's not supposed to tie in to the other 3 episodes. It's either part of another arc, or a standalone thing. Last news about it was that it's still in development, but that WAS awhile back.

Lol at you thinking i've never played opposing force.... Gearboxes expansions were ok, nothing classic... I just think it would be a poor desicion to say "we are doing three episodes as this is a triology" and then announce an Episode 4 being made by someone else... valve makes the best desicions ALWAYS so i doubt this would happen BUT we'll see. You know, gabe brought this up in an interview a long time ago, he said that the episodes are NOT expansions but a continuation, he viewed expansion packs as a way of expanding the story and events that happened in the main game, and he also said that he'd be happy to do expansions and/or let another dev team do them... So THAT i think is a good possibility but in terms of pushing the story foward and releasing a new episode, valve should really do that one themselves..

That's why nobody cares about your opinions.

Yea, so keep commenting on my posts... and i probably understated my feelings, but i feel talking about op4 isn't important rigth now. both expansions were good and very solid but it got tedious at many points where hl1 was mostly fresh and exciting...

Warning: Hazardous irrelevance detected. Administering topic-at-hand antidote.

Maybe the hypothetical episode 4 (which as previously stated shouldn't advance the current story-arc, so we're likely looking at an expansion, not an episode) will feature Barney's adventure after we see him depart in Episode 1.

Go.

Didn't Valve say that EP4 wasn't going to be an FPS?

barney will appear in ep3 helping gordon and alx all the way
bet it was barney who taught alxy how to shoot...

isn't that touching? :)
