Looking over my dvd collection I noticed that most of the films I own were made in the seventies. Chinatown, The French Connection, Alien, The Godfather I and II, Deer Hunter, etc. etc.

Why were so many great movies made in the seventies? any thoughts?

EDIT: hmm actually at a closer look the same can be said for the 40's

I would have to say "Technology".

With computers becoming modern and technology really starting to take off, directors and writers were finally able to tell better stories on screen...maybe?

VCR was invented in '71 as was the LCD.
Cell Phones came out around '79.
MS-DOS wasn't invented until '81.

Also in 1940, the color TV came out. Which may explain the '40s.

Using this logic it would appear that this millenium is a time when cinema will be at it's best in the last 30 years (if history repeats itself every 3 decades).
