The american party colors?

In america i have seen that the Republican party has a red color and the democrats are blue on maps and stuff. Republican is right wing and Democrats is left wing right? Shouldt the colors be the other way around? Red is often used for left winged partys and blue for right.

and whats the deal with that elephant and that mule or whatever it is that represents the partys?

edit: im very tired right now its 9 in the morning and i havent slept yet but i came to a conclution. My guess is that the elephant represents the big and powerfull people and the mule(if it is a mule) represents the hard working class cuz mules work and elephans are big and powerfull..am i right? LOL :bounce:
