You only remember this man in a blue suit and a briefcase, talking about a "new job", and then everything is blurred. Waking up to the sound of an empty monorail system, it stops and the train's "voice" asks you to step out, it's the last stop. Dizziness is among you as you step out, avoiding the bright light and seeing people walking hurriedly to their jobs and homes. Men in masks with guns tell you to move along, or else. Walking around, a woman says she knows you, then another 2 people say they recognize you as well. Suddenly you feel a sharp blow to your head, and it's lights out again.
Starting to remember in flashbacks, the sample shining in the beam of light, aliens appearing inside the complex, soldiers firing at you. After you took the job, they took your identity away; tried to anyhow. Realizing you have no ID card, no money, and no way of knowing where here is you ask people about the scientists you had worked with, ones you remember. After what seems like hours, you find someone who hurriedly points where Dr. Vance is.. an abandoned building with police tape around it. Meeting an excited, yet nervous scientist, he tells you what's been going on, but with one shocking twist. "We already knew about Xen, before the disaster", Vance says. "I alread know that, tell me something I don't know!!" you say, startling the doctor. Well.. erm.. the sample.. was from Xen, and we.. knew it would create a cascade but never one that large! we thought you'd be killed once it went through the beam. "I'm sorry to disapoint you, Vance but I'm very much alive after I SAVED YOUR ASS!!", screaming at him, holding your crowbar and about to strike him.
"I wouldn't do that, Gordon" a voice echoes out from a dark corner. Looking around, you see a familiar figure walking into the light, with a blue business suit on. Throwing the crowbar at him, the g-man catches it and tosses it to the ground, and hard. "this is no game, Gordon! thousands of people have died in the past 10 years, haven't you realized that!!" the g-man says. Opening his briefcase, he takes out a pistol and loads it; turning on the laser guided sights. Pointing it at your head, he asks if you want to die, or take the next job. Bewildered at the situation, you can't say a word until a shot is fired, and you feel a sharp pain in your leg. "Gordon, will you take the job or not?" he says again. "Yes!" you cry out in pain.. and black out from a syringe in the shoulder. Waking up, you are lying face down in an unfamiliar place called "City 17"....
