Which is the absolutley best graphics card today, a single card?

I guess it would be the Radeon X1900XTX, unless there's something I don't know about.

please dont start a ati vs nvidia thread lol

but the 2 current best cards are x1900xtx and 7900gtx. really the "best" card is someones opinion

yeah, the 7900gtx does better in some things and the x1900xtx does better in others, they're both good but it depends on which brand you want. I prefer nvidia but I haven't had any ati cards so I cant say they're not good. But you have my word on nvidia performance :D

Once you get to a certain level, I can guarantee you wouldnt notice a difference between the 2 cards...

So pretty much w/e you can get for cheaper

Except if your looking to run a single card, then its the x1900xtx because it does aa and hdr at the same time :D for that with nvidia your gona need sli. (to the best of my knowledge).

ATi for better image quality
nVidia for speed.

imo.

nVidia sucks for AA. :P

X1900XTX but wait for DX10?

dx10 wont be out until next year along with the other cards and most games that would run dx10 will also run dx9

Yeah, but if your going to spend the money why dont you just wait and get the better of the two.

whats the point you would be in the same dilemma later

Yeah, upgrading from a 9800 might not be such a bad idea...to save money, just get a budget card or something like the 6600 atleast untill dx10 comes out.

pick up a 7600gs or something like that on the cheap, youll be fine until next year with that.

I'm assuming that DX10 will be better then DX9 and one year isn't that long to wait.

Since Microsoft look to be making DX10 and Vista mutually exclusive I wouldn't bother waiting to buy a DX10 card unless you are also going to be shelling out for Vista too.

X1900XTX is considered the best single card by most reviews. Although the 7900GTX is right up there in a lot of games as well. I think the X1900XTX does better with AA/HDR settings (nvidia can't do both at the same time) and does better in some of the newer games such as Oblivion and FEAR with the complex shaders. But it is still back and forth who will come out better most of the time... by only a couple of FPS.

The 7900GT is probably the best value though. This is really where people end up buying. And SLI seems to be the perfered dual card solution.

But if you are a quality nut, then look at ATI. ATI can filter AF diagonal as well as horizontal, vertical really well with the HQ setting.
Notice how the center of the walk going down looks washed out on the nvidia.

What about SLI not improving performance? I read a couple places that said SLI sometimes doesn't even improve framerates. Do games have to have an SLI-optimized setting to get the most out of the setup, or do the numbers only show up in the higher resolutions?

the only reason to use sli is if you want high resolution or high AA/AF
