Close this if there is a thread like this around :).

Ok, I'm just watching the HL2 tunnel video and I noticed something for the first time. There are two semi-circles on the sides of the cross hair. One on the right one on the left.

The neat thing is the one on the right tells you how much ammo you currently have in your clip. I didn't notice that before, and I think that's a splendit idea, since I never look in the right hand corner for my ammo when I'm in combat and with the semi-circle thing right next to your cross-hair it's very easy to keep track of your clip.

Wonderfull idea Valve, wonder why it took me so long to notice it.

Same here, I just assumed the only thing it did was glow red when ur xhairs were on a enemy.
Thx for sharing.

The trouble is it's not in the newer vids. Maybe it's a HEV upgrade later in the game?

an option hopefully, options make the great game greater

The right is ammo and the left is health, you can get that by watching the vids, and valve already said they just did not enable the Xhair during some of the demos.

They've been tampreing with the HUD and weapons configs for a while now, I don't think we know how it will finally turn out. I hope you have the option to use the semicircles though, I like the idea.

EDIT: Oh, I guess VALVe has confirmed that the design will stay :D

The funny thing is after awhile you don't really need a cross-hair (except for the long shots); at close quaters you instinctivly know where to point.

This is especially obvious in the Max Payne series where the small dot is almost invisible and you really don't need it after awhile (but used to drive me crazy when I was just starting to play it)

I've said it a few times on this forum before. That crosshair is ingenius, the fact that you don't have to look down at your health or ammo anymore, instead it's out in front, graphically displayed. And you know what they say, a picture says a thousand words. It's a much faster way of knowing how much ammo and health you've got left.

This is one of the reasons why I like Valve. They are great at innovating simple things as simple as a crosshair and really making a difference. Health on the left, ammo on the right. I would have never come up with something like that.

merc, can you shed any light on this? You're the only one who has played HL2 recently.

I like the crosshair, it looks very small and neat. :)

Not exactly.

A part (or semicircle) of the crosshair goes red when ammo is low or when the health is low. Depending on whatever it is, that semicircle will become red. Neat idea.

Also, the crosshair changes colour when placed on a surface with the same colour (at least the crosshair of the guass gun and the machine gun on the buggy and airboat respectively). A very small thing, yet it helps a lot and shows that a proffesional developer takes care of even the smallest things. :)

lans, read it again

he ASSUMED it was like that, not he thinks

Doesn't it also indicate where damage is coming from?

Hopefully it's an option. Personally I'd prefer the old school HL recticle. Just a tiny dot or circle that is barely visible and doesn't get in the way. I don't like all that clutter in the middle of the screen. I've never had a problem seeing the ammo/armor on the bottom. If people like it that way that's great, but ideally it would be an option so we could choose.

Wow thx for find, cool stuff.

I heard someone saying about the fact that the crosshair changes color when it points at a surface that has the same color as the original crosshair. In which video (or part) is this noticable?

there's no need to get on lans' case here.

he simply provided a informative explanation of what the crosshair actually does.
what's so wrong with that?
