I went back to mapping today after about 2 years pause from mapping. I havent even tuched or thought about opening hammer after one of my really good maps got messed up because of some un solvable error.

Anyway, i made a small little singelplayer map today. I dont intend to make it into a game, just a showcase were the player walks around. No guns, no monsters, no action. If i come to a point were the map delivers good gameplay value then i might add it. As for now, its a reconstruction of a forgotten mine.

You enter the map through an elevator, it takes you down the shaft with red pulsing lights. This indicates that something is wrong down there, adds to the feeling. Also there are graffiti on the walls. Once you get down you enter the main room were there are lockers, barrels, junk etc. The place is supposed to look abandoned and forgotten, maye i should destroy a lamp or 2 to indicate that more. There are also some blood splatter here which tells the player that something bad happend here. There is a little cave entrence blocked of by a fence, however the fence is bent open. You might wonder who or WHAT did that...but its bent outwards *looks behind my back in fear*.
When you enter the cave there are lights hanging from the metal sceleton roof, each reacting to physics, some flickering. To the side there is a little mud basin with water. I dont know if it fits realisticaly but what the heck. Then you come to the end of the cave were there are hand rails blocking it off, there is a huge drop down. If you pay attention you will notice that there are flames deep down there creating light casting on the walls, but the fire itself you cant see.

Thats were i ended today, tomorrow i will continue to make a little train that takes you deeper and deeper inside the Mine. This is were i need your input! During the train ride i want to show the player that something has gone wrong down there. Any elements that indicates it. The train is going to go forward and take turns and then stop to go vertically downwards (like in hl1). During this i will show constructed mine sites and just normal cavern areas etc. So, anyone got any ide of what to show the player?

Also, i need some advice for the lightening, is it to bright? To dark? To red?

(i just noticed, the decal on the entrance of the cave with the numbers are a bit off)
Also im gona add more junk and decals in the cavern area, its a bit empty right now.

The map is pretty much finished. Instead of taking screenshot i made a movie and uploaded it to youtube. The screenshots above are now old and doesnt represent the final verison. (the video does).

Also, i cant edit my thread. Can admin please remove the screenshots and just add the youtube video? Thank you

Wow... I love the lighting- the red is really effective :D

All in all, from what I could glean from the video, it looks quite cool indeed.

wow thats great! It has a really nice, creepy feel to it. Great job!

When are you going to release it? I like what I'm seeing, the first bit, with the elevator, reminds me a bit about Red Faction. Nice video too.

thanks for the comments! :)

I dont tend to release this because i initialy created it for art and showcase only. There are no monsters or guns in there. It depends how i progress with it. If im able to create good gameplay elements into the maps i might turn it into a full Singelplayer Experiance. Right now im just making the mine deeper and deeper and adding new environments. If i come to a point were the maps can deliver good gameplay i will probably turn it into a game. However i need more then just a Mine for that, i need a story. Right now all i have in mind is "forgotten mine" and nothing ells to it, just a forgotten mine. If i can figure out a story and combine it with the maps that would be great. Any ideas are warmly welcome!

Hmmm, tap me up if you want some help with the gameplay/story ideas Rav

*goes away to ponder*

Hehe, grymt snyggt. Du verkar ha utvecklats en hel del sen de d?r tutorials p? half-life2.se :) :)

Would be a great portfolio/resume map when completed, gameplay or not. If you want suggestions for gameplay elements post up and we'd love to help.

Insanely too red, man. It's unnatural and is too monochromatic. Lower the saturation on ALL of the light entities, and break up the red lighting with blue and yellow tones. Architecturally it's not unique and provides no depth, in the sense it's rather blocky. Nice attempt, but I'm not digging it. Good luck, though.
