lol, ill get one if I can disable the ads somehow. Because I think the company monitors the computer.
So, people who are thinking "format c:", sorry :dozey: , they will probably find out that you havent been viewing the ads ;(
There's probably already a ad blocker available from one of "those" sites.. Not a bad deal really, I could use one for a render node, never have to look at the screen just use it remotely via some netrender app. Not a bad deal. I wonder if they'll send me 200 of them? :E

Edit: I wonder though, they say you need to install a CD each week or it wont work.. Ok well that must be software based then, some app in windows preventing it from running without specific files. Yup that'll be far too simple to crack, probably just the extent of renaming a file or something weak like that, works on ICQ's annoying banner adds ;)

Unless its something in the bios that'll do it. Might be a bit harder to mess with.

Edit2: What happens when your playing games, which most people will be, I dunno about many games but the ones I have I know don't like being taken back to the desktop for no good reason, the ads would either screw up games or force everything to crawl and go weird while they played in the background.. I bet it fails and all those people will end up keeping these machines when the company goes bust and can't get them back lol

I'm betting it'll be pretty easy, these guys don't sound like pro's, just have a nice dream that hasn't been thought through too well.. Their targetting the public that don't have computers, not the computer users like us. So what will be impossible for those users will be childsplay for anyone capable of using googlegroups heheh. Actually by the amount of people who keep repeating questions on usenet, I'd say only a handful know how to use google ;)

Heh
I'm learning fun spoofing stuff, I don't really know much about the software workings... I've got quite good with hardware though... :)

Anyway... anyone know a good trace tracer?

:) Yeah...deffinetly as a render node, and 200 of them wold deffinety work well.

Anyway, as a very knowledgable PC user, I'm sure disabling that feature is extremly easy, or we could always use the extra parts (video card and crap) to build our own computer. Oh wait...it's got a 2.4 ghz celeron processor which is equivelant to a 700mhz p4, which is equivelant to a 666mhz AMD processor. Although, as a render node, who needs to leave the damn monitor on?

Actaully, it probably has a built int intel graphics card(aka useless for games or 3d modeling), SDRAM, 24x cdrom, uselesss floppy, 15" monitor, 250 watt powersupply, etc... This is probably a typical emachines or compaq for you (BTW, if any of you buy a compaq or emachines, no matter if it had a $300 price tag...you got screwed).

Hmm swapping the HD out for anotherone would work :P then when you return int for a new one just put the old hd back in :D genious!

Intel Celeron 2.4ghz, 256Mb RAM, 40Gb Hard Drive, Intel Extreme 64Mb onboard Graphics, DVD Rom, 56K modem, Integrated Audio, Infinity Ext Speakers, Microsoft XP Home pre-installed, IBM E54 15" CRT Monitor and Includes Full 3 year IBM warranty

Those are the specs.

If I live in England I would take the deal and use that computer for downloads only.
That whole "free pc" thing gonna run that company to the grounds.

"If successful, Metronomy's plans could raise PC penetration in Britain dramatically, but spell trouble for established UK computer retailers such as PC World, Dixons and Currys."

wtf...who the hell uses pcworld, dixons and currys??? i wanna know which idiots actually go to them for their computing needs. wait i think i've answered my own question, i know exactly the sort of twats who go to pcworld, dixons and currys. it's the same twats that this scheme is aimed at. 30 somethings from milton keynes who watch pop idol and coronation street and think computers and the internet are just some weird invention.

the scheme is a good idea, but i don't think Metronomy should be the ones making it available, it should be up to the government to provide something like this. i remember blair making a speech whereby he was going to make the internet available in every home (this was about 2-3 years ago btw). Metronomy could apply for subsidies from the government and be able to do away with all the advertising and stuff. for one i think most of the people will be annoyed at having to load a cd each month. why not just get the government to install the net in each home, place a metronomy pc in each home, and get the updates sent to the pc instead of on a cd. it works with Steam so it can work with this.

What you basically described is the government doing something on a large scale and successfully.

With our government that just aint never gonna happen :)

I think the whole idea is just stupid and don't want to know about it.
