Sorry if i'm posting in the wrong forum but there's no OS forum,anyways...

What is the fuss about linux, i've used several linux distros in cluding Knoppix, Suse, Slax, Gentoo & Debian and they all just look like a second rate windows, i understand the need for linux if you need a free OS or can't afford one or you hate M$ or to run a server, but using it as a primary OS seems strange:

There is no compatibility with other platforms (At keast M$ tries to do this)

Hardly any available software (The only good software i have found is Firefox for linux)

No Games!!!!!

Anyone agree?
I'm sure there are lots of good reasons to run on linux but i just don't see any!

Umm how can linux have compatibility with other platforms when it's a platform itself? It's like saying Macs are incompatible with Windows. And it's not true that there are no games, go download Wolfenstein E.T.

I too have thought about this. And one thing that pisses me off are these Linux "fanatics", they like have switched from Windows to Linux, and act like they know everyting about Linux and only say that Windows sucks. But when you ask them "why does Windows suck?" they say "it crashes all the time!" to this I have to say that 90% of the time it is either the users fault, hardware problem or a program that crashes the Windows. I have never had any problems with Windows, no crashing what so ever (well now my comp crashes all the time, but it's because of my broken motherboard). I agree with forg0tt3n, I don't see any reasons to switch to Linux.

If you are not a developer and you are a gamer, then no, you don't have any good reasons to switch to linux. However, the fact that it is free, very stable, has the biggest community (help, support) are good reasons to use it. If you work in a company your servers are probably powered by a linux box, even Microsoft uses it. I would take the guess that these forums are hosted on a linux machine.

That said, it doesn't mean you should forget Windows and use linux all the time. I use dual boot because Linux is OS friendly (wich is another big advantage). So when I want to game, I boot in Windows, when I develop, Web pages, C++ or browse the net (without having to worry about viruses) then I use linux.

I use Fedora Core 3 btw.

I totally agree with Ti1337OON on this, i would like to get a dual boot setup going with mandrake v10.0 x86_64 with XP prof when i get my hard drive replaced.

Theres a nifty emulator for Linux called Wine that I hear emulates PC games quite well.

Wine comes bundled with knoppix but i can't get it to work!

You can also use Cedega, it's not free but it lets you play most of the games, WoW, Steam games included.

Whenever I try to play a cd game on wine, i can install it fine but when I try to play it it says "Please insert Cd".

Ok and what happens when you insert the CD? lol No it happened to me too with Mandrake. I don't remember what I did to make it work, I messed with the CD mounting commands...
