What does everyone think the future of Nato is, do you think it has a future?

With a lot of the members of Nato disagreeing with each other over the war in Iraq and with organisations such as the EU, which Turkey wants to be part of, and the UN and with the end of the Warsaw Pact, does it really have much of a future at all? One question that popped into my head last week was that if the EU was to get it's joint rapid reaction force, for the people who don't know what that is, it's a European army consisting of troops from all nations in the EU, would Nato still have a place in World Affairs.

Also, could i ask what Nato's job is now?

Since the Russians have gone and the Europeans and Americans never agree, it's pretty much obselete.

You don't hear anything about it in the news.

It'll probably be replaced by whatever organisations the members see fit for themselves.

I wouldn't say the UN does nothing, when you compare it with NATO today.

Nato was responsible for ensuring the Turkish borders during the Iraq war was fortified and that Turkey was defended from Saddam's missiles, they are also in Afghanistan as well.

From what i have found out today, the European Union getting it's Rapid Reaction Force means that communication and training amongst Nato nations is a lot simpler, instead of there being 26 members, it has been "cut down to" 3 members (America, Canada and EU). And also, there's an agreement that basically states that Nato (whole of Nato) would be responsible for global events such as Iraq and Afghanistan and the EU forces being responsible for European matters, such as Kosovo and Macedonia. Thus allowing Nato to have a much broader reach.

NATO has 2 possible futures :

* If the EU doesn't survives (I know it won't collapse, I mean ideologically) the loss of the Constitution, NATO will be great for such countries as the UK that want to get closer to the States.

* If it does, then NATO will be relegated to the dark shadows of international geopolitics, acting only as a blanket for US-led operations UN will from time to time when the EU and the US agree on something.

man enough of the quoted for truth already. youre using it in every post you make :p

and yes NATO has a future, just wait till that imbecile Bush has gone and we have a Democrat back in the White House...
