Okay, see if you guys agree.

First there were stories: cave men told hunting stories! Wow.
Then came written stories: People wrote or drew their tales to tell other people
Then came theatre: People would act out their stories to make them more believeable.
Then along came film: People could watch more realistic looking stories at home.
Then came films with special fx. So even more real.
Now... gaming?

I mean in 30 years time they reckon that graphics will be as gud as real life (or so I'm told). So is there any reason why gaming won't totally dwarf films. Actors won't be acting on camera, they'll be mapped into games and do voice overs.

They say that one thing that makes us human is the ability to tell and enjoy stories. And what's more enjoyable than actually going through and experiencing the stories ourselves.

By the end of our life times. I'll put a tenner on it

hey man if you havent noticed humans are called a social species we thrive on communication. when ever you say somehting to someone it is usually to inform them or ask to be informed. nothing else really

True enough.
You know that when TV first came out they didn't know what to do with it. They had no idea what to broadcast or anything. Although its VERY debateable whether the majority of TV progs actually have something to say, most at least pretend to.

Games, I think, are similar. Once we've jumped the hurdle of making games that have the potential to put messages across, (HL2 voice acting with realistic faces anybody?) I think it very probable that games will start having things to tell us. I mean most have some hammy message: "Don't be evil be good." etc.
Although on second thought a lot of games don't adher to that. Vice city to name one.

Gaming is very young. Very soon I think we'll see it altering at a rapid rate (if we aren't already).

Just my thoughts

I agree with you; good topic. The potential for games, or a 3D interface that promotes interaction, is still in its infancy. It is good to see bold companies pushing themselves to make games with more meat, than your average shooter.

i've always wondered about that...

where can gaming go in the next few decades?

the first answer for many is "virtual reality", but i dont belive that would be practical for home use (both in the size needed and the cost....)

soon my ALienware Area-51m will be worth as much as an e-Machine technology is going faster than we can comprehend. soon they'll have 10Ghz proccesors. no joke i read about it

Aberystwth mate! Welsh education, ya can't beat it  ;)

Yeah, pretty soon games will look just like real life.

i swear people are gonna have mental problems if they actually see a real live dead zombie at their feet. wait till when you kill something the blood splatters on you and you can actualy feel it.

It's amusing to think that back in WWII they would have done anything to get their hands on a 486. I can just imaging our kids reaction when we tell them the specs of the computers that we used to play on and show them the games we used to play.

it's amusing to think that Iraq would still do anything to get their hands on a 486.....
