What I propose is quite similar to those old enough (and around for that matter) at the time of THEOGA. This was a bunch of 'self appointed' representitives for the gaming community, which is why it was so heavily opposed and eventually fell completely through.

The gaming industry is bigger than that of movies, and hence football. So why cant a bigger industry come up with an association to help standards along in this day and age.

Obviously this association would only deal with a set number of games, ones with the most identifiable greatness (ie. competition). This would improve the standards worldwide of the gaming phenomenon.

Why doesn't each country elect one of their most well known, well liked (and so on) players for the chosen games, to be a representitive for their country in TheGA. This way they can work towards the same things the members of TheFA or UEFA work towards.

After years of having this implemented, surely you would see a start towards the integration of many leagues, and more comparable results to give us the answers to question 'who is the best clan at X'.

i don't think governments or any other kind of artistic body take gaming seriously enough to worry about standards. as far as they're concerned, games are for kids and kids shouldn't be concerned about the quality of games being produced. obviously that's completely out of touch with the reality, but that's just how it is. might take a few years to get recognised as an artistic form of entertainment for adults rather than something 'for the kids'.

Get Sega, Sony, Nintendo & M$ together on this & you'll probably have what you're asking for. I doubt it would be difficult of starting such a thing without interference from Sony & M$. They would want to be in it so they can decide in their favor :)

i never mentioned governments. initally we'd choose the bunch of people to run it, obviously, but they'd probably have little to no power once all of the different countries people got elected.

yes, some gamers are 'well known', to irc... i mean. each country's irc community has at least some idea of who the 'big guns' are in their country.

and, for the time being, i dont think we should bring anything other than PC games into this, its not as if sony or nintendo are exactly... competition in the 'internet gaming' market, is it :p

Who is Fatal1ty?

I tihnk the reason Dedalus mentioned governments is that they, and other organisations simply wouldnt recognise the Gaming Assosiation as anything of importance because at the moment they see games as for kids.

we need someone like George clooney to be on a commercial playing HL2 lol that will give it some good publicity. I am easily influenced by mass media "look george clooneys playing the game must be fun!" *runs out and buys HL2. lol jk

Johnathan 'Fatal1ty' Wendel is the CPL UT2003 champion or something, he's apparently pretty famous, and he has a line of gaming merchandise marketed after him.

Didn't 'Thresh' or someone win Carmack's Ferrari?

yes, thresh aka dennis fong, and one of carmacks five ferraris i believe. i used to be in his quake clan(Clan legends). he was the real deal, he could play like he had a 30 ping with a 200ping. really good player. :borg:

nice to see the thread turned into a conversation about l33t players and not the subject at hand!
