Subject: thanks

Mr. Newell,

Thanks for answering my earlier question (re:AI nerfing during
Barricades demo movie). Just wanted to mention that until Half-Life in
'98, I was a total Mac fanboy of the Marathon series, and would play
nothing else; I don't feel any other fps came close to the level of
immersion & backstory that Bungie created for that game. I have
enjoyed the heck out of Half-Life partly because all of you took the
time to add a complex story line. Looking forward to HL2 in a major
way - maybe I will even get the motivation up to learn some modding &
remake Marathon! That would be too cool....

By the way; on my drive out here from Florida to Sacramento, CA (doing
some temp nursing in Northern CA) I broke down in a little town called
Raton, New Mexico - suspiciously close, as I see on my map, to Black
Mesa, NM. You wouldn't know anything about that now, would you???

Take care,
Todd C. aka Solidarnosi

I'm surprised you made it out of Raton without some ... additions and
subtractions would be one way of putting it.

Amen to Marathon

"undisputed god of FPS"

Hopefully if you do get a marathon mod going it will do better than the one that was being created for the Unreal tournament engine, the old engine I mean:dozey:

I've been wanting to play marathon. it's mac only though right?

Hyped, you can get Marathon 2: Durandal through www.half.com, do a search in the computer section (make sure you get the Windows version). Also, if you are a patient person, you can get it free via the open-source Aleph One project:
http://source.bungie.org/
some other links that I have bookmarked and check every now & then:
http://www.marathon.org/
http://resurrection.bungie.org/ (the UT mod)
http://www.planetunreal.com/rampancy/info.html (another UT mod)
http://rampancy.discworld.dk/about.php (a Half-Life mod!)
http://marathon.bungie.org/story/ (the incredibly complex backstory to Marathon)
http://marathon.bungie.org/ (lots of links to other Marathon sites)
http://archives.bungie.org/about.html

So maybe I will get a Marathon mod going! There is still a rabid fanbase out there, lurking under the surface of computer life. HL2's Source could be the engine that brings rebirth to Marathon....I'm up for it. Anyone else? If so email me [email protected] I'll get a mailing list going. If enough people sign up I'll start a forum at my clan's website www.tdr-px.com just for a Marathon project.

it has absolutely nothing to do with aliens or nuke-yu-leer stuff :)

Seriously Para, if you look at a map, find Raton in the extreme North-East; if your map is detailed enough, you can follow the highway North, there is a mesa named Black Mesa off the highway to the East, it's in the middle of a few named mesas.

Beautiful area btw, Rocky Mountains to the West as you drive North in to Colorado.

I live in New Mexico, and Raton is about as far away from anything government-testing-related as you can get. It's right by the Colorado border.

It is, definitely, beautiful country there.

As far as scared government stuff, here in Albuquerque there was a hollowed out mountain (Manzanos) that had a hidden 4-lane highway entrance that just became public a few years ago. It had living space for it's employees, and a 6-tier security process for entrance. The main doors were several yards thick.

No one is really sure what all happened behind those doors.

The Black Mesa area includes the North East corner of NM and a small part of Oklahoma. Black Mesa National Park is located mostly in OK.

Marathon 2 truly is one of the finest FPSs ever created. I wish bungie would stop this Halo foolishness (which is basically a watered-down Marathon in concept and story, the main characters even look alike) and make a Halo 4, I'd buy an Xbox just to play it.

Wouldn't it be awesome if somebody made a Hl2 Mod that was one of the Marathon games. IMO Marathon 2 had one of the best plotlines the genre has ever seen, before and since its creation.

Well I'm thinking of doing just that. I made a post in the other forum about it:

Black Mesa Bed & Breakfast. A friend of a friend of a friend stayed there and said that the proprietor, who called himself "Randall Harris", was around 30 years old, thin, wore glasses, and had brown hair and a goatee. This person also reported an unusually high level of military aircraft activity.
