The HL2.net Apartments Project

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Formally known as Stone's Pet Project

This is a project (possibly to be a contest) that gives you a chance to show off you creativity, Humour, modelling and Skinning skills all at once..

The whole concept of this project originated from an old post in off topic with a link to this website LINK in which people each enter a floor to a building each floor in the building is a specific height and is a tribute to pixel art. This is what we will be doing with this project except in 3D.

Each person can enter a floor, the floor can be up to 2 floors high, and of a specific width and depth (for the walls, balconies can be included).

The whole idea of this project is to make the tallest Digital building ever beating MrWong’s Soup’Artment attempt at 2,000m and 406 residents,
People can enter more than one floor to the Apartments BUT this will only increase height not Resident count… AND WE NEED TO BEAT BOTH!

RULES

1.) No pornographic images.
2.) Stick to the topic.
3.) Don't use Screens or models from the beta.
4.) Don't steal other peoples work.
5.) You can enter more than once into the project

6.) Make sure to clearly highlight what number entry yours is.

Use this as an example:

Entry #1 by Hazza

7.) Once the entry is submitted DO NOT edit it. If this becomes a problem we will have to upload them here instead of letting you use your own space.
8.) Your entry may be constructed using any 3d software, and the final model and included skins must be made available for the final render of the building.
9.) NO mocking or flaming of peoples work! All entrances are accepted whether you are experienced or not…

The original project had a lot of hype but no entries were finished and handed in except for my own and Hiro-protagonists….

We plan to succeed this time, so please get your entries in, Posting renders here, and sending models to: [email protected] clearly stating:
HL2.NET APARTMENTS PROJECT in the title……

Thank you, and have fun,

STONE

Awesome, ill be in this for sure, but i was wondering. What is the maximum size for a room?

I had actually started on my level way back when the original had started up, so Ive already got some work done. Count me in.

Aren't you too busy to be doing something else like this right now Epyon? :)

Maybe...hey look...a birdy!
/me runs.

Right here is the template for one floor, Remember guys that you can make your floor up to two floors in height..... or have your apartment as two floors, which ever way you wish....

THE FILE IS IN A STANDARD 3dsmax5 FORMAT, IF ANYONE NEEDS IT IN ANY OTHER FORMAT JUST ASK AND I'LL TRY MY BEST...

Thanks Everyone... Have Fun

Could you get that in obj, or mb file format?

Maya doesnt natively support 3dsmax files for importation.

first problem - you cant stack on your room - because you have a roof area.

Second problem if this is going to end up being one huge model good luck rendering it ....

I'm using maya so it would be sweet if you could try and make a template that could be used with maya.

Oh ye of little faith...
Right stacking the floors....

Right a single floor, is this:

Right and to make a doublr floor you just copy it and paste it onto the top... like so...

Do you understand now?

And as for the render problem, I have a solution to that as well, just hope it works... hehehe

AND Radeon, I'll get right on it..... :p

Maybe you should set some guidlines before everyone starts modeling?
-No complex shaders
-No ray traced shadows, if used must be baked into texture
-No dmap resolutions over 4096
-No textures over 2048
-No raytracing shader effects (IE: Reflections)

Thats all I could come up with.

Also a naming set naming convention of rhte floors would help out significantly in the long run, maybe somthing like:

001_Coolhead <That would be the main folder
floor#_Author

Inside tha main folder would be:
Textures <This would make it easier to organize, and you could set textures to be located at ...\Textures this way they wouldnt have to be reassigned
Shadow Maps <Same thing for textures, and except for shadowmaps.

I do like this bit, will have to think of a system for naming....
oh and as for the complex shaders etc, i really have no problems with them, as long as they are platform compatable, and will work accross all the software, I.E If you don't think it'll work don't use them, and although the raytrace would take up render time, i have nop problem with leaving my computer to render it for a week, it'll give me time to do stuff i'm meant to be doing, like preparing work for course and portfolio...

AND additionally we have a 3DS version of the Floor spec file,
Hope this works Radeon :D

This is such an awesome idea...

But may I suggest that maybe using the Hammer editor when it comes out..... so you can have far more people making contributing

hammer is alot easier to use, so you dont need to have expensive programs OR experience in advanced modelling programs

I suck I know... but I really prefer the idea of it being in hammer......

then you can play HL2 with the apartments...

or have i missed something there
