With two months still to go before The International 2014 tournament begins, the prize pool for the event has already hit $6 milllion, surpassing Valve's final prepared stretch goal.
After being released less than two weeks ago on May 9th 2014, the prize pool has continued to grow exponentially at a rate not even Valve anticipated, making the upcoming tournament by far the biggest eSporting tournament to date. In previous International tournaments, the winning team was provided with 50% of the total prize pool, meaning this year's winner would currently go home with $3 million, over double the amount Alliance took home last year.
This milestone is also significant as all of Valve's 13 original stretch goals have been met, including the introduction of a Mini-Pudge courier, some new matchmaking gamemodes, new music, base customisation, and much more. Shortly after the prize pool surpassed its $6 million goal, Valve announced they were introducing 8 new stretch goals, which you can read all about here! The addition of these new stretch goals wasn't entirely unexpected given how much pressure the community was putting on them.
As always, we'll be sure to keep you up to date with all the recent news regarding The International 2014 tournament.
